[GIST] Northern Leaders Are Political Jobbers, Only Southern President Accepted In 2023 – Middle Belt Forum

[GIST] Northern Leaders Are Political Jobbers, Only Southern President Accepted In 2023 – Middle Belt Forum

All Content

The Middle Belt Forum has said it was not part of the meeting held by the Northern leaders of thought at Arewa House, Kaduna State on Saturday.

It described the meeting in which the North subtly wants to retain power after President Muhammadu Buhari must have completed his reins in 2023 as, “a grand ploy to truncate power shift to the South by 2023.”

These were contained in a statement by its National President, Dr Pogu Bitrus, which was obtained by SaharaReporters.

It read, “The attention of the Middle Belt Forum (MBF) has been drawn to the communique issued at the end of a meeting convened by the Northern Elders' Forum under the auspices of Northern Leaders of Thought (NLT) over opposition to power rotation to the South in 2023.

“Considering the circumstances under which the group met and membership of those who attended the meeting on January 15, 2022 at the Arewa House in Kaduna, it is clear that there are subterranean forces aimed at frustrating the power shift arrangement to the South in 2023. See Also Politics 2023: Northern Elders Forum Opposes Zoning Of Presidency To South

“By May 2023, President Muhammadu Buhari, a Northerner, should have completed two tenures of four years each as provided for in the Nigerian Constitution. To insist that another Northerner should continue in power beyond May 2023 amounts to violating the arrangement on power shift that has become the norm since the return of democracy in May 1999.

“As the umbrella organisation for all ethnic nationalities in the Middle Belt, the MBF is confident that Nigeria is blessed with competent and qualified persons from all sections of the country who can offer altruistic leadership in advancing national development.

"Since 1999, power shift has not only ensured equity in power-sharing procedure between the North and South; it has also reduced tension amongst Nigeria’s diverse ethnic groups in the struggle for power. After a careful perusal of the communique issued at the end of a hurriedly packaged meeting by the NLT, it is evidently clear that there is a grand ploy to truncate power shift to the South by 2023.

“We recall that after our consultative meeting that took place in September 2021 in Akwanga, Nasarawa State, the Forum did not only express its resounding support for power rotation to the South, the MBF also noted that for fairness to hold sway, it was irretrievably necessary for power to return to the South in 2023.”

The MBF said it will always support justice which rotation of power has provided, stressing its opposition against the North producing President in 2023.

“Our position was hinged on the fact that the power rotation has tremendously assisted in mitigating political tension by creating a platform for power-sharing in the country. As we have always declared in the past, the MBF wishes to restate once again that any threat against power shift to the South in 2023 is akin to courting frightening dangers to the unity and progress of Nigeria.

“We stand for justice and freedom for all. The MBF is completely against the NLT's opposition to power shift in 2023. Those who met in Kaduna at the weekend must halt further attempts to create political turmoil for our nation.

“Members of the NLT are not political leaders; they are forerunners of some nebulous political forces determined to foist fiery dark clouds over our country’s political skies. To insist that the power-sharing arrangement should be jettisoned now is an open invitation to anarchy that may ultimately lead to the breakup of the country.

“We need to remind Nigerians that the Middle Belt has always insisted that power must shift to the South in 2023. In the event that the South is unable to present a presidential candidate, we have confirmed our readiness to support the emergence of a presidential candidate of the Middle Belt extraction for the 2023 polls. We are in agreement with the Southern socio-cultural groups in the struggle for power shift to the South in 2023.

“Under the President Buhari-led administration, Nigerians are witnessing one of their worst moments. With insecurity ravaging many parts of Nigeria, poor economic policies by the current administration have reduced our nation into the global headquarters of poverty.

“Not only have hundreds of communities in the Middle Belt Region destroyed and completely taken over by foreign invaders, thousands of our people have been massacred in cold blood as deadly herdsmen and other criminals continue to unleash their dreadful reign of terror on defenceless Nigerians.

“The Middle Belt Region is convinced that President Buhari has not demonstrated enough courage and political will to confront these monsters of insecurity. Thus, it is clear that only power shift offers an opportunity to deal with these terror gangs that are alleged to enjoy the support of some rogue Northern politicians yet to be exposed by the government.

“Once again, we call on political parties to disregard the chicanery of these leaders of the so-called North and their opposition to zoning in 2023. Those who gathered in Kaduna last weekend were political jobbers engaged in carrying the commands of their masters that are lurking in the shadows. Therefore, the communique of that meeting should be contemptuously ignored,” it added.

[GIST] Nnamdi Kanu’s Lawyer Reacts To New Charges Filed By Nigerian Government Hours To Court Sitting

[GIST] Nnamdi Kanu’s Lawyer Reacts To New Charges Filed By Nigerian Government Hours To Court Sitting

Ifeanyi Ejiofor, lead counsel to the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, has stated that the fresh 15-count amended charge filed by the Nigerian government against his client barely 24 hours of his appearance in court is a ploy to delay the case.

The lawyer said the fresh charge is the worst kind of abuse of legal process in history, adding that Kanu’s legal representatives are prepared to trash the antics of the prosecution.

Kanu will enter a fresh plea to a 15-count charge marked FHC/ABJ/CR/383/2015 and signed by Director of Public Prosecution, M.B Abubakar as it was filed yesterday.

Reacting in a statement after his routine visit to the separatist leader, Ejiofor, on Monday, described the charges as, “a joke taken too far as the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN)” who is now scouting for an opportunity to truncate tomorrow’s proceeding.”

Ejiofor who visited Kanu in the company of his colleague, Maxwell Opara and Kanu’s brother, Emmanuel Kanu, however, urged the supporters who want to attend court today to remain civil.

The statement read, “I visited Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu today in the company of Bar. Maxwell Opara and Prince Emmanuel Kanu, for a final brief on the level of our preparedness for tomorrow’s legal onslaught.

“The meeting also afforded us the opportunity to further brief Onyendu on a completely ridiculous 15-Count Amended Charge filed and served on us today, the 17th day of January 2022 on a matter already fixed for hearing of our Preliminary Objection tomorrow, the 18th day of January, 2022. What a joke!

“Today, we were served with a 15-Count Amended Charge filed by the Director of Public Prosecution of the Federation in respect of a case already scheduled tomorrow, for the hearing of our preliminary objection challenging the competence of the 7-Count Amended Charge.

“This is indeed a joke taken too far as the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) is now scouting for an opportunity to truncate tomorrow’s proceeding, knowing fully well that the smokescreen charge is dead on arrival.

“We wish to categorically point out with dismay, that this further Amended Charge is the WORST kind of abuse of legal process that we have encountered in the history of legal practice - either in Nigeria or anywhere in the world.

“This 15-Count Amended Charge was no doubt brought in bad faith and is aimed at needlessly prolonging proceedings in the cause. The same FGN that brought our Client to Court is needlessly initiating processes that will delay the trial.

“It is worthy to note that an Amended 7-Count Charge had earlier been filed against Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu since October 2021, pursuant to which a preliminary objection was raised against this 7-Count Amended Charge. The parties have fully filed and exchanged processes and arguments on the objection, and the same has been set down for hearing.

“Brazenly, a day before the hearing date, and without affording the court the opportunity to listen to arguments on the objection, and take a decision on the objection raised one way or the other, the prosecution, in utter bad faith, filed a further Amended Charge to supercede and supplant the earlier Amended Charge on which issues have been joined on the objection raised against it. This is indeed, the worst kind of abuse of the court process.

“Although the prosecution has the liberty to amend a charge, it cannot exercise that prerogative to abuse the process of the court, or to supplant an objection that has been raised against an earlier amendment, which has not been decided on, or to overreach the defence, or to render nugatory or as a fait accompli, the decision of the court on a pending preliminary objection against an Amended Charge that is yet to be determined.

“Nevertheless, we herein assure UmuChineke that we have already devised a solution to every of their antics, it will only end in court, they can only run thus far. We, therefore, urge you all to await the legal fireworks in court tomorrow. There must be light at the end of the tunnel.

“Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is still in strong spirit and will be in court Live, tomorrow. We are fully prepared and ever ready for tomorrow’s outing, and as usual, we crave for your relentless prayers and peaceful solidarity.

“We are reiterating Onyendu's request for civility in your conduct as you have always done, within and outside the court. The World is watching and it shall end in Praises.

“Thank you all, UMUCHINEKE and remain blessed.”

[GIST] Police Summon Controversial Former Kano Commissioner, Muazu Magaji, Silent On Reason For Invitation

The Kano State Police Command has summoned Muazu Magaji, a former Commissioner for Works in the administration of Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.

Magaji revealed that he was invited by the SBI Political Desk of the command but that they failed to tell him the purpose of the invitation.

Muazu Magaji

“I received a call that they wanted me to appear before them. I asked on what basis and they told me that I will know all that is happening when I come.

“When I insisted, they said it was the Kano state government that filed a complaint against me,” he said.

When asked whether he honoured the invitation, Magaji said he was presently in Abuja and that he would honour the invitation once he gets to Kano on Tuesday.

“What am I running from? I will surely honor the invitation tomorrow,” he assured.

However, the command’s Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, was not available to comment on the matter.

Magaji has been controversial since he was sacked as commissioner in Kano.

The governor had reappointed him as his aide on AKK Gas Pipeline but fired him afterwards.

From that moment, the sacked commissioner has been criticising Ganduje and his administration on Facebook.

Presently, Magaji is a member of the Shekarau’s camp of the All Progressive Congress in Kano.

[GIST] Anambra Catholic School Hurriedly Buries Student Who Died After Maltreatment By Teacher

An 11-year-old JSS 1 student of St Valerian Catholic School, Onitsha, Anambra State, Izuchukwu David Onwualu, has died after being allegedly maltreated by a female basic science teacher in the school.

But the school in an attempt to cover up the case, gave the boy’s father some money and hurriedly buried the student, according to a report by FIJ.

Dubem Onwualu Christopher, the deceased’s father, said he took his son to the school on a motorcycle last Tuesday morning only to see him writhing in pain in the evening.

“I left the school to where my wife and I sold carbonated drinks near my house,” he told FIJ.

Christopher said he was in the market to get beverages for dinner when his wife called that his son was not feeling fine.

On getting home, he met david writhing in pain.

“My wife was pouring water on him and, at the same time, crying for help,” he said.

The deceased's father said David’s classmates were present and they disclosed it was their basic science teacher that maltreated him.

The students, in a clip, revealed that the teacher repeatedly hit Izuchukwu with a plastic bottle on his head.

According to them, the teacher was angry because he failed to do his assignment.

David would later be made to do the assignment on the spot.

"Nobody did anything while our teacher was flogging him,” one of David’s classmates said in a video.

“She was always flogging him when he misbehaved. If he wrote slowly, she flogged him. If she played roughly, she flogged him.

“When she was flogging him, she did not know he would hit his head on the wall. She flogged him, but he was not crying, so she kept flogging him to make sure he cried. During the flogging, he broke free and hit his head on the wall," he added.
