However, a source told PUNCH that the insurgents were successfully repelled by men of the Nigerian Army.

“We were at the barrack when we began to hear sounds of bombs around 3:00pm this afternoon. Then we heard that they were trying to enter Mainahari Village near Wakabiu but the army were on alert and they immediately engaged the insurgents.

“There was no casualty on the side of the Nigerian Army but we are told the Army killed scores of the insurgents, seized a gun truck and many ammunition from the fleeing insurgents,” a civilian source was quoted as saying.

This trails an attack by the insurgents five days ago on the Tukur Buratai Institute for War and Peace, a research institute of the Nigerian Army University in Buratai Village, Biu Local Government Area of Borno State.

SaharaReporters had reported that the insurgents attacked the Buratai community on Monday, shooting heavy artillery.

Buratai is the country home of the immediate past Chief of Army Staff and current Nigerian Ambassador to the Republic of Benin, Tukur Buratai.

A military source had said the situation forced people to scamper for safety and remain indoors as the shooting continued.

[GIST] 2023: Ohanaeze Lists Five Conditions For South-East Presidential Aspirants

[GIST] 2023: Ohanaeze Lists Five Conditions For South-East Presidential Aspirants

All Content

The Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has highlighted five main requirements for any candidate vying for position of the president from the South-East region.

While the group affirmed that it had no favourite candidate among the presidential aspirants that had already declared interest, it said that politician who wanted to be the president of Nigeria must be a person with high intellect, courage and audacity.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo

According to Punch, the National Publicity Secretary of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Alex Ogbonnia, revealed these in an interview.

He said, “Such a person must also have political sagacity and national appeal. He must be patriotic and above all, must have a track record of accomplishment.”

On whether the group would invite aspirants from the South-East for a meeting on the need for them to step down for more favourable aspirants to avoid jeopardising the chances of the zone during the primaries, he said it would be done when all interest must have been expressed.

“We want more aspirants to come out first. Assuming we had called for a meeting about four days ago (Sunday), we wouldn’t have seen the likes of Chief David Umahi; we wouldn’t have seen the likes of the Chief Whip of the Senate, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu.

“So, let them begin to come out; it will come to a point where we can now decide whom Ndigbo will support,” Ogbonnia said.

He, however, noted that there would be no screening of aspirants as Ohanaeze knew the credentials of every Igbo man of note.

“We already know their credentials. There’s no person in Igboland of note we don’t know of his background. So, they don’t require any screening,” he added.

Speaking on whether there would be a meeting with the two major political parties to discuss the need for them to field their candidates from the South-East, Ogbonnia said, “Yes, we have already done that in several fora and we’ll continue on that.”

Meanwhile, the Ohanaeze Ndigbo General Assembly Worldwide has urged the South-East to consult widely and build bridges ahead of the 2023 elections.

The group said for the Igbo to have any stake in the Nigerian project in the coming elections, they should stop threatening other tribes and regions in the country.

[GIST] South-West Outfit, Amotekun Arrests 17 Bandits Who Stormed Ondo Community

[GIST] South-West Outfit, Amotekun Arrests 17 Bandits Who Stormed Ondo Community

All Content

Operatives of the Ondo State Security Network, codenamed Amotekun Corps, are currently interrogating no fewer than 17 suspected bandits arrested with over 30 dogs, cutlasses and charms.

Reports revealed that they were arrested after they stormed Okititpupa town, the headquarters of Okitipupa Local Government Area of the state, and could not explain their mission to residents who were alarmed.

Amotekun officials in the South-West states had on Thursday said the regional outfit was on the alert following renewed attacks by killer herdsmen and terrorists in Ondo State.

The officials in Osun, Oyo, Ondo and Ekiti states had disclosed that they had received credible intelligence that terrorists and bandits fleeing military operations in the North-West would seek refuge in the forests of the southern states.

They therefore said they had commenced combing forests in the region for the fleeing terrorists.

Although the corps had yet to link those arrested at Okitipupa to a particular crime, residents panicked over their suspicious movement within the town on Thursday and alerted the personnel who arrested them.

The Commander of Amotekun in the state, Akogun Adetunji Adeleye, was quoted by Daily Post that the northerners stated that an unnamed person invited them to the state.

He said, “They were people who claimed to have come from the northern part of the country with dogs, charms and cutlasses and the people of Okitipupa area who were not comfortable with them raised the alarm.

“But on interrogation, they claimed they were invited to Okitipupa by somebody and that they are actually working for the person. All attempts to reach the person they claimed to work for have not yielded any result till date.

“However, we want to warn residents to be vigilant when they see what I will call mysterious things. We have over 30 dogs among able bodied men who don’t even know where they are going. They claimed they were dropped in Okitipupa by a vehicle and that the vehicle had left.

“This calls for a very serious concern looking at the very serious security situation in the country. Investigation into who brought them and their real mission is still ongoing. They were attempting to enter the forest behind the military barracks in Okitipupa when they were arrested.”

The incident has caused panic in the area as the hoodlums who came in a vehicle and police operatives engaged in a gun duel.

Meanwhile, it was gathered that on arrival, the invaders opened fire but they were immediately repelled by the policemen on duty.

The state police spokesperson, Micheal Abattam, confirmed the attack saying the attackers were repelled by the cops on duty.

He also stated that one inspector was killed while another sustained minor injury during the attack.

Abattam said, “On 14th January, 2022 at about 20:45 hours, the Command’s Tactical teams at Mgbidi Police Station repelled an attack by some hoodlums who came in a white Hilux vehicle shooting sporadically, attempted to gain entrance into the station but were repelled by the ever gallant Imo Command’s Tactical teams and the police operatives of the division who positioned themselves professionally.

“They engaged the hoodlums in a gun duel. In the process, the attackers were suppressed almost immediately, having suffered a huge defeat, with a number of them sustaining various degrees of bullet wounds, they retreated and escaped in the Toyota Hilux vehicle they came with. And they were given a hot chase by the police operatives.

“Consequently, a vigorous and aggressive manhunt of the hoodlums is ongoing with the sole aim of tracking and arresting the fleeing hoodlums since they cannot go far because of the huge damage done to them.

“However, in the course of the attack, a police Inspector lost his life, while another sustained minor bullet injury on his hand.

“Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Rabiu Hussaini, commended the officers and men for their gallantry and urged them not to relent in their efforts until all criminal elements and their partners are apprehended and made to face the full wrath of the law.

“He then appealed to Imolites for the continuous support and collaboration by giving security agencies especially the Police, credible and timely information and to report any person seen treating bullet wounds or hiding within the community to the nearest police station for prompt action.”

[GIST] IPOB Declares Sit-at-home On Tuesday As Nnamdi Kanu Appears In Court

[GIST] IPOB Declares Sit-at-home On Tuesday As Nnamdi Kanu Appears In Court

All Content

The Indigenous People of Biafra has asked its members and supporters of its detained leader, Nnamdi Kanu, living in South-East to boycott social and economic activities on Tuesday.

The sit-at-home on January, according to the group, is to allow the Biafra agitators give solidarity to Kanu, who will appear before Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court, Abuja on that day.

IPOB, however, clarified that there will be no sit-at-home on Wednesday and Thursday, saying that, "we don't want to compound the pains of our people, hence, we will limit the sit-at-home to only January 18" .

In a statement by the group's spokesperson, Emma Powerful, on Saturday, IPOB also reminded its followers that another court in Abia State was expected to deliver a judgment on Wednesday over Kanu's fundamental human rights as filed by his Special Counsel, Barrister Aloy Ejimakor.

The statement reads, "We are the Indigenous People of Biafra IPOB under the command of our indefatigable leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. Following our leader's upcoming court proceedings on the 18th, 19th and 20th of January 2022 next week, we wish to remind Biafrans that there will be only sit at home on 18th of January, and not 19th and 20th of January. In keeping with our avowed solidarity with our leader, the entire Biafra land will be on lock down only on January 18 for obvious reasons.

"Biafrans should understand that 19th January is the judgment day in the suit by our leader against the Federal Government which is pending before an Umuahia High Court. So, there will be no sit-at-home on that day.

"Again, we don't want to compound the pains of our people, hence, we will limit the sit-at-home to only January 18. Biafrans and residents of Biafra are free to go about their businesses without molestations on 19th and 20th January. Anybody found enforcing non-existent Monday sit-at-home on 17th, 19th and 20th is criminal and must treat as such, IPOB leadership have given order and that order is what signed.

"Everybody must be careful because this waves that is coming will consume many and every principal of IPOB mostly the coordinators must know that it will bounce on their heads if they don't checkmate the activities of members and call them to order. IPOB is not village or social club where everybody will behave untoward to people like cultists.

"It is on the table and to the knowledge of IPOB leadership how some principal officers were encouraging evils in IPOB without minding the repercussions and consequences but we want to make categorically known to them that it will come back to him or her that encouraged evil against his or her fellow human beings

"For clarity sake, we reiterate that there will be no sit-at-home on January 19th and 20th. Nobody is expected to interfere with either human or vehicular movements in those days under any guise. Any detractor or agent of darkness caught obstructing peoples activities in Biafra land on January 19th and 20th in the name of enforcing sit-at-home will regret his or her actions.

"We realise that some unscrupulous and traitors are trying to create confusion about these days and dishing false information and propaganda trying to create confusion in Biafra land. IPOB never declared sit at home on 19th and 20th of January 2022. Therefore, we want all Biafrans to go to their normal business on these days without fear.

"Anybody issuing order for sit at home on 19th and 20th of January is not a member of IPOB. Such persons are working against the interest of our leader and the entire struggle for independence. They should be disregarded.

"For the umpteenth time, IPOB is under one Central command and Control , and doesn't have parallel or factional leadership. The Directorate of State under the command of our leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, is in charge of the global movement of IPOB.

"Anybody who is not loyal to DOS is an impostor and should be disregarded.

"We expect our people everywhere to adhere to this directive and refuse to be misled by sacked members of IPOB in Europe and America. IPOB remains unshakeable, built and rooted on the rock and will remain so until the freedom for Biafra is fully achieved."
