[GIST] 2023: Tinubu's Presidential Ambition Won’t Stop Osinbajo – Aide

[GIST] 2023: Tinubu's Presidential Ambition Won’t Stop Osinbajo – Aide

All Content

An aide to Vice-president Yemi Osinbajo has said his boss would not abandon his interest to contest the 2023 presidential election because of the declaration by Bola Tinubu, ex-governor of Lagos State.

Tinubu had on Monday announced that he had informed President Muhammadu Buhari of his interest to vie for the country's presidency.

The development had elicited several reactions, with many claiming such move would mark the end of Osinbajo's interest in the same office.

But speaking with Daily Independent on Tuesday, the vice-president's aide, who preferred anonymity, said his principal is “very much interested in vying for the number one office in the country.”

He, however, said unlike Tinubu, the APC national leader who went to Buhari to inform him of his intention to contest for the presidency in 2023, Osinbajo was waiting for directives from President Buhari, who is the leader of the APC, on the way forward for the 2023 presidential election.

The aide said the vice president enjoys a lot of goodwill from Nigerians who believe that he is the best candidate who can sustain the legacies of the present administration and even do things better.

He said those claiming that Tinubu beat Osinbajo by declaring for the presidency were wrong because “the vice president has no declaration to make unless authorised by the president.”

He said, “The vice president is very much interested in contesting. From what we have seen, many Nigerians, including key figures in the political and corporate world, believe that he is the best to succeed President Buhari.

“I know the impression many people have is that because his benefactor, Tinubu has declared interest to run, the vice president will perish his ambition. But that is not true. The vice president will contest but he will not jump the gun.

“Right now, he is waiting for directives from President Muhammadu Buhari. If indeed the president wants him as his successor and gives him his blessings to contest so as to continue with the programmes of the administration, he will not turn down the request.”

[GIST] EXCLUSIVE: How Nigerian Oil Mogul, Arthur Eze, Allegedly Ordered Arrest, Detention Of Worker After Accusing Him Of Forgery, Money Laundering

SaharaReporters has unraveled how Nigerian billionaire and politician, Arthur Eze, allegedly ordered the arrest and detention of one of his former workers, Emeka Jesse, an information technology engineer, after accusing him of money laundering and forgery.

Emeka was arrested on December 28, 2021 at his residence in Kubwa area of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, by armed policemen numbering about 10 from the Police Headquarters.

Prince Arthur Eze

The policemen allegedly surrounded and broke into his house around 9:00am before putting him on handcuff and ransacking the entire house.

Emeka was thereafter taken to Kubwa Police Station Phase 4 where he was detained till afternoon before being transferred to the Force Headquarters where he was made to write a statement while being interrogated.

Upon arrival at the Force Headquarters, the IT engineer was accused of conniving with Eze's nephews, Olisa Eze, his business manager, and Onyeka Eze, his accountant, to forge and manipulate some documents to withdraw money from the billionaire's bank account.

The police, in the course of the investigation, seized Jesse’s laptop, mobile phones and account details with a view to finding incriminating evidence to use to nail him.

The police have since refused to come up with any evidence linking Jesse to the alleged offence and have continued to unlawfully keep him in detention after denying him access to a lawyer.

Olisa and Onyeka were arrested in November 2020 by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for fraud and charged to court.

However, both men are now walking freely while Jesse, who stopped working for Eze since November 11, 2020 had remained in police custody.

Despite letting police know that he worked under Olisa and Onyeka and only carried out different official assignments for them including sending of mails, booking of flight tickets and fixing of office computers as IT engineer, the law enforcement officers have continued to detain him unlawfully.

A reliable source told SaharaReporters that the police were carrying out the instructions of the Inspector-General of Police, who is said to be directly handling the matter.

The source further revealed that the police may not release Jesse until the billionaire gives the prompting.

In a desperate bid to keep him perpetually in custody after not being able to find any evidence to link him to the allegations, the police have asked Jesse to produce Olisa and Onyeka to exonerate him from the accusation.

The 32-year-old engineer has remained in custody at the Asokoro Police Station where he has been kept all along because of lack of space at Force Headquarters.

Efforts by SaharaReporters to get Force Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba, to comment on the issue were unsuccessful as calls put across to his mobile phone were not answered.

He had yet to respond to a text message sent to him on the issue as well as of the time of this report.

[GIST] Coalition Asks National Assembly To Hasten Passage Of Electoral Bill

[GIST] Coalition Asks National Assembly To Hasten Passage Of Electoral Bill

A coalition of civil society organisations has called on the National Assembly not to postpone resumption of sitting so scheduled for January 18, 2022 so as to fast-track the process of passing the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill 2021 vetoed by President Muhammadu Buhari.
The civil society groups made the call in Abuja on Monday during a press briefing to advocate electoral reforms in the country.

The conference which was jointly addressed by Convener of Raising New Voices Initiative, Jude Feranmi, Executive Director of Adopt a Goal Initiative, Ariyo-Dare Atoye, and Rachel Anyanwu, called on the leadership of National Assembly to rectify all errors which may cause issues in the interpretation and execution of the law by government agencies.

They added that such errors were responsible for the refusal of the President to assent to the bill.
The coalition said, "On December 20, 2021, President Muhammadu Buhari wrote to the National Assembly citing varying reasons why he had refused to assent to the Electoral Amendment Bill sent to him by both chambers.
"The conclusion reached by the President drew various criticisms from the Nigerian populace and outright disappointment from civil society organisations working to ensure the conduct of freer, fairer and more credible elections in the forthcoming exercises happening in Ekiti, Osun and the 2023 general elections.
"To say the least, Mr President’s refusal to assent to this bill has set back the advocacy for these democratic reforms. However, as civil society organisations, we cannot rest and must ensure that the desire of Nigerians for a more credible electoral process where the people can elect leaders of their choices and their votes will count must become a reality.
"It is for this reason that we are calling the attention of the National Assembly to make the following demands.
"Under no circumstance should the January 18 resumption date set by the leadership of both chambers for members of the Senate and House of Reps be postponed. Any further delay will put in jeopardy our efforts to ensure the passage of this bill.”
