The Muslim Rights Concern has urged the Nigerian Government to declare the first of Muharram Hijrah, which is the first day in the Islamic calendar, as a public holiday to favour Muslims.

According to Akintola, the New Year celebrations according to the Gregorian calendar was “unfair, unjust and undemocratic” to Muslims in Nigeria.

He stated that if the Nigerian Government failed to properly recognise the first day of the Muslim calendar as it has recognised the Christian calendar, it should stop declaring New Year holidays.

Akintola said, “As usual, the Federal Government declared January 1, 2022, a public holiday in recognition of the first day of the Christian Gregorian calendar but because the day fell on a Saturday, FG created an alternative by declaring the following Monday a public holiday.

“This is an aberration and a gross injustice because Nigerian Muslims have been demanding the declaration of the first day of the Islamic calendar as a holiday for more than 20 years to no avail.

“It simply means that FG under President Muhammadu Buhari is also supporting the Christianisation of Nigeria. It considers the first day of the Christian calendar as sacred while the first day of the Islamic calendar is regarded as unimportant.

“MURIC frowns at this lopsided arrangement. It is unfair, unjust and undemocratic. We demand an immediate review of FG’s holiday policy.

“We demand the declaration of the first day of the Islamic calendar as a holiday to justify the 1st January holiday that is declared annually by FG. January 1 holiday is a Christian colonial creation designed to dignify and rubber-cushion the pomp and pageantry of Christmas. In the interest of peace, FG should review this Christian colonial heritage.

“Nigeria became independent 62 years ago and 62 years is long enough to right wrongs perpetrated by the British slavemasters. Democracy is fraudulent without equal participation, equal rights and justice. 

"We demand parity now and only the recognition of the first day of the Islamic new year can balance the equilibrium and ensure parity, justice and fair play.

“Holidays are part of the dividends of democracy. However, the dividends must not be dished out in a selective manner."

Students of Seventh-Day Adventist School of Nursing, Lagere, Ile Ife, Osun State, have kicked against the imposition of N5,000 Coronavirus test fee by the school's management on each of them.

This comes ahead of their resumption after the Christmas and New Year holidays.

“Every student is required to undergo a mandatory COVID-19 test on resumption. This will take place at the hospital compound having paid a non-negotiable sum of N5,000,” part of the memo from the management read.

However, some students who spoke with SaharaReporters, described the fee as insensitive on the part of the school authorities.

They accused the management of extortion.

“The test we did last year, you won’t believe we weren’t given the result till now. All my friends are lamenting now, but nobody can face the school management. 

“This is just an extortion, real one, Three days to resumption, you are telling us to pay all sort of money,” one of the students told SaharaReporters.

About 200 bodies have been recovered and buried after gunmen suspected to be bandits invaded different communities in Anka and Bukkuyum local government areas of Zamfara State.

Some of the communities are Barayar Zaki, Wanu, Rafin Gero, Laho, Lallaho, Kurfar Danya, Dutsin Dan Ajiya, Tungar Geza, Kewaye and Tungar Na More.

SaharaReporters gathered that over 200 corpses have been recovered from bushes as some of the people were caught unawares on their farmlands.

In Kurfad Danye alone, sources said about 140 bodies of vigilante members were buried on Friday.

The bandits, who were about 300 and armed with sophisticated weapons, had on Wednesday stormed the communities on motorcycles and started firing sporadic gunshot.

The terrorists also destroyed valuables, abducted and displaced several persons, including women and children in the affected communities.

Deadly attacks have raged across Zamfara State where banditry had thrived.

Farming and herding communities in the state have long been terrorised by gangs, who raid villages, steal cattle and kidnap residents for ransom.

In 2019, the state government entered a peace agreement with the gunmen.

About 15 brand new Hilux vehicles and cash gifts were also given to leaders of different 'repentant' gangs of bandits by the governor in 2020.

But despite all these, communities in the state are still being attacked and residents kidnapped and or killed.

A prison officer, Kayode Adeniyi, attached to a correctional centre in Ondo town, Ondo State, has allegedly killed himself over his inability to pay house rent and meet other financial obligations.

Adeniyi reportedly shot himself in the head in his room and died instantly.

It was gathered that the the deceased had complained several times that neighbours and other residents in the street where he resides always made jest of him for his inability to pay his house rent, electricity bill and meet his financial obligations.

No suicide note was found in the room except the dane gun allegedly used in killing himself.

“Whenever we were discussing, he would be lamenting over some issues, which included house rent and electricity bills.

“We even advised him to relocate to another place if he could not stand it or calm down those he owed that he would pay them later. We did not know he had another plan in mind. We did not know why he did that? Probably it was due to stress from personal issues or other challenges,” one of his friends said.
