The Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodinma, has pledged that the residents of the state will be adequately protected from security challenges ravaging the South-East region.

He also expressed his preparedness and optimism in “flushing out unrepentant bad eggs” from the state.

The governor stated this in a Facebook post after meeting Air Vice-Marshal Frank Okpara.

There have been agitations for an Indigenous People of Biafra across the South-East region, including Imo State.

Since the return of IPOB separatist leader Nnamdi Kanu to detention in Nigeria, the agitators have continually enforced a sit-at-home order on Mondays.

Nigerian officials had earlier extradited Kanu.

The officials said that Kanu was brought back after he jumped bail and went on the run in 2017.

His family and lawyers said he was illegally arrested in June while in Kenya, tortured, and flown back to Nigeria.

Giving an update from the meeting, the governor said, “In furtherance to our synergy with security agencies for an improved security network across the state and other sundry services. Yesterday, I had an interactive session with Air Vice Marshal Frank Okpara who came calling on an official visit.

 “We deliberated on issues bordering on improved security of lives and properties in line with the most professional conduct and rules of engagement while flushing out every bad egg that chose to be unrepentant and I am optimistic of a sustained and improved security situation of our dear state.

“Prominent on our discussion is the establishment of Air Force Secondary School to complement on our existing educational institutions and offer a greater sense of belonging. I leveraged this visit to seek the full equipping of the Air Force Hospital in Owerri and ensuring the availability of Healthcare services to the host community and the state at large.”

A group, Movement for a Socialist Alternative, has kicked against the University of Benin, Edo State's extra N20,000 charge imposed by the management for the late payment of school fees.

The UNIBEN had earlier announced that students who did not pay school fees within the stipulated time will have to pay extra charges and may likely have their studentship withdrawn.

The statement signed by the school public relations officer, Dr. Benedicta Ehanire noted that “registration by all students closes on 3rd September, 2021; and after such date, students will no longer have access to the school portal.”

The group, Movement for a Socialist Alternative, disclosed that late payment was not a criminal offence, while they rejected expulsion as punishment for late payment of school fees and 20,000 additional charges.

This was revealed in a statement obtained by SaharaReporters on Tuesday.

It partly reads, “With the recent directive by the Salami-led school management to expulse students who fail to meet the deadline and its supposedly ₦20,000 charge imposed as penalty fee for late payers, it is clear that the management is not considerate.

"In this light, The Movement for Socialist Alternative, calls on the Salami-led school management to reverse its anti-student policies. For the mere fact that it is averse to the very time we live in— an attack on the democratic and fundamental rights of every student to access free and quality education.

"Strangely, the Salami led management is driven by the logic of profit; painfully, not the supposed “motherly care” that was sentimentally canvassed as the driving spirit of her administration.

"We are forced to think, therefore, why the management has chosen to display this level of desperation? And clearly willing to defeat the very essence of its establishment to allow everyone access to education.” 

The group said the policy is akin to a military mentality and being imposed by a generation of administrators who basically attended free and affordable institutions.

"How can one possible envisage a scenario wherein a 300 or even a final year student so financial challenged would lose all of his or her year of struggle, hard work and study on account of not being able to immediately pay the school fees?

"Interestingly, this draconian policy,  is akin to a military mentality, is being imposed by a generation of administrators who basically attended free and affordable institutions; who were at liberty to pay even to the  point of graduation when they had their final clearance.

"This is the very same thing that should be continued; given the current climate of economic difficulties, the crisis of poverty wages, and the late payment of salaries.” 

They noted that there are self-sponsoring students, who side by side with the economic hardship and high cost of living, still struggle to be in school.

"This is why the question of independent student unionism must be placed in the right perspective. And with the coming SUG election set to hold on September 16, 2021, this banner for independence and the democratic control and management by the students should be raised high.

"This neo-liberal capitalist approach to commercialize and privatize education, and make it exclusively an affair for only the super-rich in the society must be rejected. The time to organise is now. We call on ASUU in UNIBEN to stand up to be counted and also reject this draconian and inhumane approach to student's right to education. 

"As opposed to the management's policies, we call on the Salami-led school management to put in place policies and programme up to the point of scholarship for indigent and financially challenged students. Such programme's structures and facilities can help access fund for students that are orphaned for the duration of their academic programme,” the statement added.

President Muhammadu Buhari is seeking the approval of the National Assembly to borrow $4,054,476,863 (N1.6 trillion) and €710 million (N 343 billion) in an addendum to the 2018-2020 borrowing plan.

The president also asked the National Assembly to approve grant components of $125 million (N51 billion).

The request was made in a letter read by Senate President Ahmad Lawan on the floor of the upper legislative chamber on Tuesday.

In July, the legislators approved the sums of $8.3 billion and €490 million loans contained in the initial 2018-2020 borrowing plan.

But in the letter, Buhari explained that owing to “emerging needs”, there is a need to raise more funds for some “critical projects.”

He said, “I write on the above subject and submit the attached addendum to the proposed 2018-2020 external rolling borrowing plan for the consideration and concurrent approval of the senate for the same to become effective.

“The distinguished senate president may recall that u submitted a request on the 2018-2020 borrowing plan for the approval of the senate in May 2021.

“However, in view of other emerging needs and to ensure that all critical projects approved by FEC as of June 2021 are incorporated, I hereby forward an addendum to the proposed borrowing plan.

“The projects listed in the external borrowing plan are to be financed through sovereign loans from the World Bank, French Development Agency, EXIM Bank and IFAD in the total sum of $4,054,476,863 and €710 million and grant components of $125 million.”

The president said the loans, when obtained, will stimulate the economy and create jobs.

The United Arab Emirates on Monday designated six Nigerians as financiers of Boko Haram and other criminal activities.

The decision was made when the Emirate federal cabinet met in the capital Abu Dhabi on Monday, according to state-run WAM news agency.

Abdurrahaman Ado Musa, Salihu Yusuf Adamu, Bashir Ali Yusuf, Muhammed Ibrahim Isa, Ibrahim Ali Alhassan and Surajo Abubakar Muhammad were the six Nigerians placed on the Middle-East giant’s watch list.

According to Peoples’ Gazette, the decision came about a year after the Nigerians were indicted for sponsoring Boko Haram.

A Nigerian government official said to be involved in sponsoring the dreaded sect that has killed over 100,000 civilians and security forces and inflicted untold economic damage on the country since its campaign began in 2009.

The government official has yet to be publicly identified by the Emirati authorities, amidst claims that some elements in the Nigerian government were mounting diplomatic pressure not to publish the name.

At least 47 other foreign nationals and entities were also added to the watch list by the UAE on Monday.

The Christian Association of Nigeria, Gombe State chapter, has congratulated the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Ali Isa Pantami, on his promotion to the rank of a professor of Cyber Security.

In a letter written by the association's secretary, Senior Apostle John Adedigba, on behalf of all the members of the caretaker committee, the body extolled Pantami for the feat describing him as a ‘son’.

Gombe CAN further claimed that Pantami had achieved a lot in his current position stating that he had made them proud.

The letter reads: “On behalf of the Christian community in Gombe State, we happily rejoice and congratulate our own son and brother Prof Isa Ali Pantami FNCS, FBCS, FIIM, MCPN, the Honourable Minister of Communication and Digital Economy on your promotion to the rank of professor of Cyber Security and your two years in office.

“We join you, your family, Gombe State and Nigeria at large to celebrate this promotion, we are proud of you as a son in Gombe State and we pray that it will be useful to Nigerians and humanity at large.

“We are not unaware of your great achievement as the Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, just to mention but few, the over one thousand completed projects and almost 400 ongoing projects in Nigeria under your supervision within two years with the support of President Muhammadu Buhari, indeed you have made us proud as a son, we pray as a church that God will use you to achieve many more and you will finish well in Jesus name. Once again Congratulations.”

This is despite the allegations against the Minister of his involvement in terror-linked activities.

“This jihad is an obligation for every single believer, especially in Nigeria,’’ Pantami was quoted as saying in one of his vicious preaching in the 2000s.

“Oh God, give victory to the Taliban and Al-Qaeda,” he was quoted to have also said.

In other audio clips that surfaced online, Pantami was also heard as sympathetic to Boko Haram members when delivering sermons at several worship centres in the 2000s.

However, Pantami claimed he had renounced his radical comments and said his views had changed over time. He said he had in the past 15 years been traversing the country to preach against terrorism.

Despite the Minister’s claim, most Nigerians said the minister ought to have resigned due to public backlash and be investigated by the authorities. Should he fail to resign, some commentators said he ought to be sacked by the President.

But the Presidency, showing support for Pantami, dismissed the possibility of sacking the controversial Minister because he had allegedly apologised for his radical views.
