A 14-year-old minor, who was allegedly defiled by a Nollywood actor, Olanrewaju James, popularly known as Baba Ijesha, has testified against him before the Lagos State Special Offences Court, Ikeja.

The teenager stated on Tuesday that Baba Ijesha once inserted his car keys into her private parts and sexually abused her, sometime between 2013 and 2014 when they first met.

Recall that Baba Ijesha is facing a six-count charge of alleged defilement of a minor.

Mrs Olayinka Adeyemi, the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) in Lagos earlier informed the court that the state would be presenting the minor as its second witness.

She further urged Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo to order members of the public and press out of the courtroom to protect the minor’s identity, leaving only lawyers and court registrars.

“Sometime between 2013 and 2014, the defendant sexually abused the complainant (name withheld), then aged seven, by inserting his car keys into her vagina.

“He also placed her on his laps, touched her in a sexual manner and rubbed his penis on her body.

“On April 19, he indecently treated and sexually assaulted the complainant, now 14 years old, by sucking her fingers and touching her in a sexual manner.

“He also attempted to have sexual intercourse with the complainant by unbuckling his belt and unzipping his trousers after sexually assaulting her,” the DPP told the court, speaking for the minor.

The actor was charged on six counts of sexual assault by penetration, indecent treatment of a child, and sexual assault, which contravene sections 259, 135, and 261 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2011, as well as 135, 263, and 262 Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.

He has, however, pleaded not guilty.

The case was however adjourned till August 11 and 12 for the continuation of trial.

The State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Kotongs Bello, confirmed the incident, saying the police were able to rescue five of them from the kidnappers.

The PPRO, who was unable to give details of the incident, said the command was working hard to ensure the remaining officers were also rescued unhurt.

Nigeria is currently reeling under the grip of bandits and kidnappers with several school abductions particularly in northern Nigeria and kidnappings for ransoms in the south.

Several school children and travellers are currently in kidnappers’ dens, as banditry is relatively becoming a booming criminal business.

The Boko Haram insurgents have also routinely abducted personnel of the Nigerian military, especially personnel of the Operation Hadan Kai who are involved in the counterinsurgency operations.

The Presidency has explained what it believes is the reason behind President Muhammadu Buhari’s incessant trips to the London, United Kingdom, to get medical treatment and meet his foreign doctors.

The Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the president, Femi Adesina, said his principal had used a medical team for over 40 years. He noted that hence, there was the need to continue seeking medical help from them.

President Muhammadu Buhari

Buhari had gone to UK under the guise of attending a virtual conference that other leaders would be joining from their countries due to the effect of COVID-19 restrictions.

Buhari, according to a release on Monday, travelled two days ahead of the two-day event that will end on July 29 and that is virtual; because he will be principally attending to his medical needs during the trip. Speaking on a Channels Television interview, Adesina stated that why Buhari visited the UK each time for his medical needs.

“President Buhari has been with the same doctors and medical team for upward of 40 years. It is advisable that he continues with those who know his medical history; and that is why he comes to London to see them. He has used the same medical team for over 40 years. Once you can afford it, then stay with the team that has your history,” Adesina said.

When asked if the President would pilot the nation’s affairs from the UK, the presidential spokesman said there is no vacuum within the seat of power.

He explained that the Constitution empowers Vice President Yemi Osinbajo to act as President if President Buhari is not back to the country within 21 days.

“The nation is running, there is a vice president who will attend to critical issues. There is no vacuum and a constitutional amendment has sorted that out,” Adesina explained.

SaharaReporters had earlier reported that Buhari travelled to London to participate in the Global Education Summit on Financing Global Partnership for Education (GPE) 2021-2025.

According to the GPE organisers, only the Kenyan President, Uhuru Kenyatta, would host the event live with Prime Minister Boris Johnson, while other leaders were advised to join online as part of worldwide measures against the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“After the Summit, the President will spend a few days for an earlier scheduled medical check-up. He is due back by second week of August, 2021,” Adesina had said in his release. A source said soldiers onboard about 11 military vehicles stormed the community with a list of about 30 suspected informants, Daily Trust reports.

The source said, “When they came, they began moving from house to house with the list.

“They arrested some suspects, including one woman. One Musa Na’umma was among those arrested.

“When Na’umma was nabbed, he was taken to an army formation in the community and was locked inside a room. However, when a soldier entered the room, the suspect quickly grabbed the soldier’s rifle and struggled with him in an attempt to seize it.

“The suspected informant then fired shot(s) at a jerry can containing petrol and it quickly burst into flames. The soldier then swiftly jumped out of the room leaving the suspect in the raging flames.”

Senator Saidu Dansadau, who represented Zamfara Central between 1999 and 2007, corroborated the information from the source.

Residents also confirmed that there have been suspicion on how some residents have been having deals with bandits through trading.

The suspected informants are being accused of becoming agents for bandits, selling rustled cows, stolen phones and motorbikes for them.

The residents have, in recent times, become more watchful, scrutinising the suspects’ activities.

“During the recent nocturnal raid on the community, the voices of some of the informants were heard and identified, pinpointing residential houses for the selected targets of the assailants.”

“I can tell you that about a dozen of youths mostly native inhabitants of Dansadau have drifted to banditry largely through financial inducements from these criminals. They are there with bandits in various camps inside forest,” he added.

The residents of the community had recently drawn the ire of the armed gang for blocking most of the channels they use to get food, especially bread and soft drinks.

The bandits had stepped up assault on the community in retaliation.
