[GIST] Gunmen Attack Plateau Community, Kill 11 Residents, Burn 30 Houses

Residents of Plateau State and the Miyyeti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria are currently in a war of words after gunmen carried out a midnight raid on Te’egbe community in the Bassa Local Government Area of the state in which no fewer than 11 persons were murdered.

According to Tribune, the incident happened at about 1am when the invaders unleashed terror on the inhabitants, killing and burning houses at random.

The police confirmed that 10 persons were killed and 30 houses burnt in the attack.

Reacting to the incident, the Irigwe Development Association described the latest attack as part of a grand plot by herdsmen to push the Irigwe people out of their ancestral land.

He lamented that attacks on the Irigwe people had continued unabated.

But the state chapter of MACBAN said the allegation against its members concerning the latest killings at Te’egbe was a mere expression of hatred towards the herders.

The National President of the Irigwe Development Association, Prince Robert Arshi, said the latest attack on the Irigwe was a surprise, given recent peace and reconciliation meetings between the locals and the Fulani community.

“The motive of these attackers is not far from the fact that they want to push us out and claim our lands for grazing. Our neighbouring villages to Kaduna have been displaced and our people have since relocated.

“Just two weeks ago, they killed two people in Anchan village. While still mourning these people, they invaded Te’egbe community on Friday and killed another eleven, injured four others injured and burned many houses despite the series of reconciliation meeting to make us live in peace,” he said.

He called on security agencies to arrest the perpetrators of the dastardly act. However, the state chapter of MACBAN condemned the allegation that herdsmen were behind the Friday attack on Te’egbe.

The association, in a statement by its state chairman, Malam Muhammad Nuru Abdullahi, said the allegation was nothing but mere indication of hatred for herders.

“We are saying that the allegation is false. The Irigwe people should have allowed the security agencies to fish out the perpetrators of the attack before jumping to conclusions based on perceptions,” it said.

Bassa Local Government Area, especially the Irigwe axis, for some time now, has been experiencing loss of lives and destruction of houses and farmlands as a result due to constant attacks by gunmen.

One of the groups at the forefront of last year’s #EndSARS protest, the #EndSARS Frontliners, has demanded that the state governments in Lagos and 18 other states where probe panels sat should make their reports public and indicted personnel of the Nigeria Police Force must be prosecuted.

#EndSARS Frontliners in a statement obtained by SaharaReporters on Saturday noted that compensations recommended by the state panels must also be “paid in full to all victims and their families.”

The group noted that there must be a clear indication that the government was “ready to work to reform the police, put an end to the brutality suffered by citizens, and begin the process of healing that the country so desperately needs.”

It said, “The 309-paged report by the Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry on Restitution for Victims of SARS Related Abuses and Other Matters (JPI Report) is a crucial first step in the right direction, with a long journey to go.

“The presentation of the JPI report by the panel to the Governor of Lagos State, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, marks a significant milestone; however, the value of the report will only be realised when the government takes steps in good faith to ensure transparency and accountability in implementing its recommendations.

“The Justice Okuwobi-led panel has gone a long way in acknowledging the pain of Nigerian citizens, who have been left scarred for years by traumatic experiences at the hands of the country’s security agencies. Crucially, the report also confirmed the reality of the Lekki Toll Gate Massacre, by naming verified victims, deceased and living, who suffered an inhumane, horrific act of human rights abuse, being shot at by the same security agents sworn to protect us as they peacefully protested for justice.

“It is important to note that Lagos State’s JPI report is just one of the many that are expected. In response to our #5for5 demands, on October 15, 2020 the National Executive Council (NEC) mandated all state governments to set up Judicial Panels of Inquiry on Police Brutality and other Related Offences. One year and 2,791 petitions later, 7 states - Borno, Jigawa, Kano, Kebbi, Sokoto, Yobe and Zamfara - have refused to set up panels; 6 states have completed sittings and submitted reports (Ekiti, Ondo & Bayelsa are publicly available); 18 states have completed sittings but not submitted reports; 3 states have suspended sittings indefinitely; Kogi inaugurated its panel but has not had any sittings; and the sitting in Abuja is ongoing.

“We are using this opportunity to reiterate our demands for justice and remind the Nigerian state of its constitutional responsibility as stated in Section 14(2)(b) of the 1999 Nigerian Constitution (as amended) – “the security and welfare of the people shall be the primary purpose of government.”

“The state governments in Lagos and the other 18 states are to ensure that the reports of the panels are finalised and all made public. All persons indicted in the reports are duly prosecuted and punished, and any compensation recommended is paid in full to all victims and their families.

“Clear action to fulfil all promises made regarding police reform. The Police Service Commission should fulfill its mandate and provide a detailed reform strategy with timelines and milestones to improve the remuneration, welfare, training and working conditions of police officers to enable collaboration by civil society organisations and accountability by the government to its commitments.”

The #EndSARS Frontliners added that it was important that a “sincere apology by the state and federal government is received by the victims of police brutality and military oppression in Nigeria at large, and specifically the Lekki Toll Gate Massacre.”

“A memorial of this horrific occurrence must also be installed at the Lekki Toll Gate, to forever mark the memory of the deceased, and honor their martyrdom.

“This will be a clear indication that the government is ready to work to reform the police, put an end to the brutality suffered by citizens, and begin the process of healing that the country so desperately needs,” it added.

Yoruba’s socio-political organisation, Afenifere, has said there is no basis to appeal to the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari to release Yoruba Nation agitator and activist, Sunday Adeyemo, also known as Sunday Igboho.

Afenifere also called on the Federal Government to obey the order of the Oyo State High Court, sitting in Ibadan, which awarded N20billion against the Department of State Services for damaging Igboho’s house during a midnight raid on July 1, 2021.

It stated this while reacting to the recent visit by some Igbo leaders to the president at the State House to request the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu.

The Igbo leaders, under the aegis of Highly Respected Igbo Greats, had appealed to the president to ensure Kanu’s release.

Members of the delegation led by a former Minister of Aviation, 93-year-old Mbazulike Amaechi, were former governor of Anambra State, Chukwuemeka Ezeife; Bishop Sunday Onuoha of the Methodist Church, former president of Igbo socio-cultural group, Aka Ikenga, Goddy Uwazurike and Tagbo Amaechi.

Buhari had while responding to the Igbo leaders, in a statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, said the unconditional release of the IPOB leader, who is currently standing trial, runs contrary to the doctrine of separation of powers between the executive and judiciary.

Igboho, who was arrested by the Republic of Benin authorities at the Cotonou Airport on July 19, 2021, has been in a detention facility in the neighbouring country.

But Afenifere said it had no reason to beg the president to release Igboho because the agitator ‘did not commit any offence whatsoever’.

“We do not have to beg the President to release Sunday Igboho. Sunday Igboho did not commit any offence whatsoever; that’s our position. Those who went to invade his house were terrorists in Nigerian security uniform and they have no right whatsoever and that has been tested in a court of competent jurisdiction. Igboho has been absolved and the government was visited with N20bn worth of damages," the group said.

General-Secretary of Afenifere, Sola Ebiseni, said, “There is no basis for the Yoruba people to beg the Federal Government to release Sunday Igboho.

“In spite of the impunity of the Buhari government, we insist that Nigeria shall not be governed except by the rule of law.

“The deep night invasion of Sunday Igboho’s house with the aim of killing him which resulted in killing of two of his companions and wanton destruction of his property is already adjudged by a court of competent jurisdiction as a most barbaric act of state terrorism with the sum of N20bn in damages.”

Afenifere also said there was no charge of criminal conduct against Igboho in any court.

Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammad Buhari on Media and Publicity, says the president deserves credit over his efforts in tackling the farmers-herders crisis in the country.

Shehu disclosed this on Friday while presenting a paper, tagged ‘Fake news: Challenges of information management’, at the 10th year anniversary of the Federal University Dutsin-Ma (FUDMA), in Katsina State.

He said, “When the government came to power, the terrorist group held and administered an area the size of Belgium. Now they hold none. The terrorists are hiding out amongst remote forests and across borders.

“This makes it difficult to extinguish the final flames of the insurgency, and the government has no illusions of the potent threat still posed.

“Recent statistics have shown that over 14,500 boko haram members have voluntarily surrendered.

“However, the progress made cannot be denied. In the face of rising crime and insecurity, the government’s new community policing initiative was launched.

“Some 10,000 new constables were recruited and the process is on for another 10,000 to be recruited from the areas they will safeguard as opposed to past practice.

“The government hopes this will bring policing closer to local communities. N13billion was earmarked for the initial initiative. Going by the plan, every year will see an additional 10,000 policemen.

“It is an opinion that the president’s comments on IPOB, which led the banning of twitter in Nigeria was controversial. For many it was not.

“President Buhari has therefore been warning against social media disruptive and divisive influences, and the government’s action is not a knee-jerk reaction to Twitter’s preposterous deletion of his tweet which should have been read in full.”

He added, “The tweet was not a threat, but a statement of fact. As a terrorist organisation, IPOB poses a significant threat to the safety and security of Nigerian citizens.

“When the President said that they will be treated “in a language they understand,” he merely reiterated that their force shall be met with force. It is a basic principle of security services response world over.

“This is not a promotion of hate, but a pledge to uphold citizens’ right to freedom from harm. The government cannot be expected to capitulate to terrorists,” according to Shehu.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Vice Chancellor (VC) of the University, Prof. Armaya’u Hamisu-Bichi, said it is a great pleasure to witness a decade of existence of the institution.

According to him, “it is not an easy task to develop an institution from the scratch to its present level, saying it is the best among other universities FUDMA was established together with.”

He also narrated the challenges the university’s management has passed through in the past 10 years before it attained its present status.
