The anti-corruption agency, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has invited about 25 members of the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCSN), for questioning over alleged corruption, SaharaReporters has learnt.

A statement by Comrade Andrew Emelieze, Convener of the Congress of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (CSCSN) on Friday, which was obtained by SaharaReporters, said the Kwara State Secretary of the union, Comrade Joseph Meshech and the Deputy Secretary-General of ASCSN, Comrade Apebo Joshua, were also interrogated. 
            
The body said the invitation of the executives and members confirmed its earlier position that there was corruption in various industrial unions. 

The statement said, "Information reaching us has confirmed the invitation of close to twenty-five staff members of the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCSN), an affiliate of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC); over issues of corruption in the trade union. 
"Our source also confirmed the interrogation of the Kwara State secretary of the union, Comrade Joseph Meshech. Among those also invited for interrogation include the Deputy Secretary-General of ASCSN Comrade, Apebo Joshua.

"The invitation of ASCSN officials by the EFCC has justified the agitations of some activists in the labour movement in Nigeria, that massive corruption is going on in our different industrial unions. Groups like the All Workers Convergence (AWC) and the Congress of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (CSCSN) have been raising alarm over the rot in the labour movement especially in the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCSN) which has assumed a crisis situation. 
"Most unfortunately, the response from members of the union has been docile and nonchalant, even the media has not given adequate attention to our query over the privatization of the labour unions in Nigeria except for a few radical journalists that have been following our challenge against the labour bureaucracy in Nigeria.
"Most surprisingly is the fact that we also called on the Minister of Labour and his ministry, the Head of Service of the Federation, the TUC, and even some social activists but there was no positive response from any of the aforementioned. Present events have vindicated our agitations.

"We, therefore, call on the EFCC to do a thorough job and ensure that they do not compromise as we are aware that there are lots of petitions against ASCSN in the EFCC and other anti-graft agencies. Other anti-graft agencies are also called upon to swing into action and investigate the corruption in ASCSN. We are also calling on the mass media to interrogate the allegations of corruption in ASCSN.

"The world can now see why the embattled defacto Secretary-General (SG) of ASCSN has refused to retire at sixty years in line with public service rules and at over sixty-five years he has succeeded in demonising the union and promoting mass fraud in the union. "Presently under the SG 'Comrade' Alade Bashir Lawal, ASCSN has been brought to disrepute. We now know why Lawal has been manipulating members of the union to stay in office beyond sixty-five years. We now know why Lawal has plotted the removal of the President of ASCSN Comrade Bola Innocent Audu and we now know why Lawal has sacked close to twenty young Nigerian workers in ASCSN within a month. We now know why Lawal has installed his stooge, Dr Tommy Okoh as the de facto President of ASCSN.
"To all members that have been sitting on the fence, it is time we woke up. It is our welfare and our check-off dues that are at stake. Lawal must pay for his crimes against Civil Servants and humanity. We call for Lawal's investigations. Lawal Must Go."

Suspected kidnappers have abducted a school principal, the vice principal, and three other teachers along Auga-Ise road in the Akoko East Local Government Area of Ondo state.

Joshua Adeyemi is the Principal of Auga Community Grammar School who was abducted while lfedayo Yesufu is the Vice Principal.

The three teachers from the same school also abducted are Oloyede Bukola, Adagunodo Funmilayo and Blessing Okeke.

It was learnt that the incident occurred on Thursday afternoon while they were travelling in a Blue Toyota Corolla car belonging to the school principal along the Auga-Ise road in the local government area, Vanguard reports. 

The victims were said to have been ambushed and whisked away into a thick forest by the abductors.

One of the victims, Blessing Okeke, was released after the captors discovered that she was pregnant.

Narrating the incident, Blessing said they were waylaid while travelling in the principal's vehicle from the school back home.

Blessing narrated that they trekked for hours inside a thick forest before she was released after their abductors discovered she was pregnant.

The Divisional Police Officer for Ikare division, Oladutoye Akinwan, said detectives had been deployed to comb the forest in a bid to secure the release of the victims.

Akinwa added that the vehicle in which the victims were travelling before their abduction had been recovered from the spot where it was abandoned by the kidnappers.

Justice N.E Maha of the Federal High Court, Abuja, has adjourned to February 8, 2022, an application seeking the enforcement of fundamental rights filed by a businessman, Emeka Richmond Ngornadi.

 

Ngornadi is challenging the Director-General of the Department of State Services, Yusuf Bichi, over his (Ngornadi's) illegal arrest and detention since April 10, 2021 for making comments in support of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) on social media.

At the resumed hearing of the case on Thursday, the trial judge adjourned the matter to February 8, 2022 on the ground that the applicant's reply on point of law and further affidavits to the respondents’ counter-affidavit was not yet received by the court.

The judge, after she had listened to the submissions of both applicant and defence counsels, Festus Ogun and Echika Owete, respectively stated that she would not go on with the case in the interest of justice until the record of the said application was properly received by the court.

Ngonardi, who hailed from Imo State, was arrested while travelling from Lagos to Anambra State by DSS operatives who were said to have been trailing him for two years.

It was gathered that before his arrest, the businessman was travelling from Lagos to Anambra to deliver baby items and goods he had bought for his pregnant wife who had earlier called to inform him that her Estimated Delivery Date was close.

The wife eventually gave birth in June but lost the baby due to psychological trauma over the arrest of her husband.

The DSS had accused him of being an IPOB member for openly expressing support for Biafra agitators and condemning security agents for the killing of innocent citizens in the Eastern region of the county.

Emeka had also developed strange illness in DSS custody as he was said to be vomiting blood with rashes all over his body and had been denied access to doctors or drugs by the secret police.

The situation had raised concerns among his family members as his health condition got worse by the day.

The DSS had refused to charge him to court  as he continued to languish in illegal detention in violation of his fundamental rights..

But the service hurriedly transferred him to a military holding facility Wama in Niger State shortly after he filed a suit challenging his unlawful detention.

SaharaReporters had reported how the operatives allegedly threatened to kill him if he dared to make any attempt to take the matter to court or if anybody took the matter to court on his behalf.

In a respondent's affidavits marked FHC/ABJ/CS/994/2021 obtained by SaharaReporters, the DSS had claimed that the applicant confessed to facilitating financial donations and funds to Eastern Security Network (ESN) through one Chinedu Arukwu presently at large.

The Osun State Police Command on Thursday stated that the son of the owner of Hilton Hotel and Resorts, Ile-Ife, Raheem Adedoyin, had not been declared wanted for complicity in the murder of the late Timothy Adegoke because the autopsy result into the cause of the death of the student was not yet out.
This was made known by the Police Public Relations Officer for the state command, Yemisi Opalola, noting that the owner of the hotel, Dr Ramon Adedoyin was still in police custody and yet charged to court because the autopsy result was yet to be out.


“The autopsy result is not yet out,” she said.
SaharaReporters earlier reported that the family of the Master of Business Administration (MBA) student of Obafemi Awolowo University, who died mysteriously after lodging at Hilton Hotels and Resorts in Ile Ife had rebuked the police for failing to arrest Raheem Adedoyin, who was recently said to have dumped Timothy's corpse in the bush.
In a statement by the family’s lawyer, Kayode Ajulo which was obtained by SaharaReporters on Thursday, Timothy’s family had reiterated that all those scheming to distort justice for the dead would not be spared to face the wrath of the law.
“Considering the circumstances of the disingenuously orchestrated murder of Mr. Timothy Adegoke Oludare, the Law Enforcement Agency whose primary duty is to protect lives of citizens ought to exert the same energy invested in trailing and arresting suspected secessionists in arresting Mr. Raheem Adedoyin, who is allegedly at large.
“While one wonders whether the labelling of Raheem Adedoyin as a prime suspect is a game plan to unclamp Dr. Rahman Adedoyin, a panoptic appraisal of the whole saga will reveal nothing more than an attempt by some dark sections to allow glittering externalities to subvert the core of genuine probing and discreet investigations in the guise to pervert the cause of justice which we shall definitely refute.
“Now that the Police know so much, it is time to start asking more questions: Why has Raheem Adedoyin not been declared wanted and an intelligence team churned out to arrest him?
“Why would the hoteliers break into the late Timothy Adegoke’s room on the first night when he actually paid for two nights at the hotel?
“Why have the suspects not been charged before a Court of Competent record as prescribed by the Constitution?
“Without doubt, it must be clear to those who still have eyes to see and a conscience which is alive, that the credibility of the Nigerian Police Force at such a crucial time like this depends in large measure on their handling of this present case where some persons have declared themselves as the untouchables,” Ajulo had said.

Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, has said that the about 14million out-of-school children in Nigeria could turn to Boko Haram recruits in the next 10 years.

Obasanjo, who lamented the increase in number of the out-of-school children in Nigeria, described them as potential Boko Haram terrorists.

This was contained in his statement while addressing participants at the presidential youth mentorship retreat held at Youth Development Centre, Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Obasanjo explained that with about 14million out-of-school children roaming Nigerian streets, no one needed an oracle to know the children would turn to criminals and terrorists in the coming years.

The former President said, “A situation today where we have 14million children that should be in school that are not in school; does anybody need to be an oracle to tell that 10 years or 15 years from now, those will be where you will recruit pure Boko Haram.

“So, if you deal with Boko Haram by stick today; in few years’ time the situation will be worse because we are talking about security, it will be worse. So, if we are talking of insecurity, where should we begin? If we are talking of poverty where should we begin? It is education.

“Somebody said if everybody is educated, who will be a servant and I said if everybody is educated, then we will get a better servant than you should have got from those that are not educated.

“If I was a Yoruba leader, I would not have succeeded as I succeeded for Nigeria, I might have succeeded for the Yoruba. Your brother from South-East is right, I believe that every Nigerian is more respected in the committee of nations if Nigeria remains.

“Don’t let us deceive ourselves; will people still respect us because of our population, 200 million people, you cannot just waste them, even when I go out, people will say you Nigerians are not at the table. That is true, we are not at the table when we should be at the table.

“I have no regret for fighting for the unity of Nigeria and if it comes up tomorrow that it should be done and I have ability to do it, I will do what I have to do. I believe that the last thing is not in our fighting for the unity of this country; it is in subsequent leadership that we have.”
