Operatives of the Ogun State Police Command have arrested three young men for torturing one Tunji George to death on allegation of stealing.

A statement from the command's spokesperson, Abimbola Oyeyemi, disclosed that the three suspects; Felix Sunday, Shomuye Musa and Oluwatobi Michael tortured the victim on an allegation of stealing an iPhone 6.

The police added, “The suspects were arrested following a report by one Bola George who reported at Onipanu Divisional Headquarters that her brother was alleged to have stolen a iPhone 6 at Keke hotel in Iyana Iyesi Ota, consequent upon which the deceased was tied with rope in the hotel and tortured to death.

“Having realised that the victim was about giving up the ghost, the suspects quickly rushed him to the hospital, but before they got to the hospital, the victim has kicked the bucket.”

The Divisional Police Officer, Bamidele Job, immediately mobilised his men to the scene and apprehended two of the suspects while the remaining one was arrested in the hotel.

On interrogation, the suspects told the police that they strongly suspected the deceased was the person who stole the iPhone 6, and in order to recover the said phone from him, they decided to torture him not knowing that it would result to his death.

The corpse of the victim has been deposited at the general hospital mortuary Ota for an autopsy.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Lanre Bankole, has ordered the immediate transfer of the suspects to the homicide section of the state criminal investigation and intelligence department for further investigation and diligent prosecution.

Bankole also warned that the command under his leadership would not tolerate any form of jungle justice and whoever engaged in such act, no matter his status or position, would not be spared from the punishment of the law.

Nineteen years old girl, Miss Challotte Delhi, accused of cyber stalking in the sharing of the nude video of a former Permanent Secretary of the Bayelsa State Ministry of Education, Dr. Walton Liverpool, on the social media has been granted bail by a Federal High Court sitting in Yenagoa, the state capital. 

The judge, Justice Isa Dashen, on Thursday after hearing the positions of the two counsels on the bail, granted the bail at N5million and a surety with landed property in the jurisdiction of the state. 


The Department of State Services, in the suit number FHC/YNG/33C/2021, filed a one-count charge against the defendant alleging that she engaged in cyber stalking with intention of blackmail which is contrary to section 24(2)c and punishable under subparagraph (b) of the cybercrime (prohibition , prevention etc) Act, 2015.

The two motions on bail and commencement of trial were taken with both counsels, Principal Legal officer of the DSS, Victor Uchendu, and a former Attorney-General of Bayelsa State and Counsel to the Defendant, A.S. Arthur, agreeing to the bail of the accused. 

After the ruling on bail, the presiding judge ordered commencement of the trial of the accused with the calling of former Permanent Secretary, Liverpool as the first witness. 

In his revelation, Dr. Liverpool, whose nude picture was allegedly posted on the social media by the accused, said he met the accused through her friend request to him on Facebook on 23rd of August, 2021 and had a consenting sexual relationship at a popular hotel known as Golden Gate in the state capital. 

He noted that the nude video allegedly released by the accused had caused him psychological and physical pains. 

He said he almost committed suicide and fainted after his immediate and extended family viewed it on the Internet. 

Meanwhile, Justice Dashen adjourned till November 9, 2021 to rule on the issue of exhibit to be admitted by the court.

The Nigerian Army is filled “with corrupt generals and unable to protect the country from the mutating violence,” The Economist newspaper reported. 

“Nigeria’s army is mighty on paper,” the London magazine added.

“But many of its soldiers are ‘ghosts’ who exist only on the payroll, and much of its equipment is stolen and sold to insurgents.”

The Economist in an extensive report on Thursday said Nigeria had not been able to address its insecurity because military chiefs plundered much of the country’s combat resources and the rest had stretched thin with little capacity to forestall the crisis.  

“Little more than six decades ago, as Nigeria was nearing independence, even those who were soon to govern Africa’s largest country had their doubts about whether it would hold together.

“British colonists had drawn a border around land that was home to more than 250 ethnic groups. Obafemi Awolowo, a politician of that era, evoked Metternich, fretting that Nigeria is not a nation. It is a mere geographical expression.

“The early years of independence seemed to prove him right. Coup followed coup. Ethnic pogroms helped spark a civil war that cost 1m lives, as the south-eastern region calling itself Biafra tried to break away and was ruthlessly crushed. Military rule was the norm until 1999. 

“Despite this inauspicious start, Nigeria is now a powerhouse. Home to one in six sub-Saharan Africans, it is the continent’s most boisterous democracy. Its economy, the largest, generates a quarter of Africa’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).  

“The army is also stretched thin, having been deployed to all of Nigeria’s state,” the paper said in its upcoming October 23 issue that was published on its website today. 

The paper also said Nigeria police has become demoralised due to poor training and endemic corruption. 

“The police are understaffed, demoralised and poorly trained. Many supplement their low pay by robbing the public they have sworn to protect,” it said.

Nigerian soldiers, especially those deployed in Operation Lafiya Dole in the North-East, have always complained about poor welfare.

Some claimed they had not been given fragmental jackets (bullet-resistant vests) since they got drafted into the war theatre.

Some soldiers, who spoke to SaharaReporters in May, 2021 also lamented that the army owed them in uniform and boot allowances and also made deductions from their salary in the name of a housing scheme. 

They added that they had not been eating and feeding well since their deployment to Borno.

“There was no housing scheme in the pipeline that the new Chief of Army Staff met when he assumed office. No soldier was consulted, and questionnaires were not shared to sensitise or sample the opinion of troops.

“Our salary has not been increased; we still buy uniforms and boots for ourselves; we live in dilapidated buildings. We've not been paid a uniform allowance and boot allowance. You are deployed to a company, the company pays the sum of N150,000, but the Commanding Officer will pay each soldier N30,000,” a soldier had said.

The late former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Dr. Obadiah Mailafia, will be laid to rest on November 5, 2021.

Obadia died on September 19, 2021, at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital in Gwagwalada.

A former Minister of Information, Professor Jerry Gana, was named to head the Burial Steering Committee for the funeral programme.

This was mentioned in a statement by Dr Gideon Para-Mallam, on behalf of the BSC.

He said, “After a meeting of the committee held on Wednesday, October 20, 2021, in Abuja, a funeral programme was approved for Thursday, November 4, 2021, for service of songs/tributes at 5pm, while the funeral service shall take place the following day Friday, November 5, 2021, at 11am. 

“Both events shall take place at the National Christian Centre, Abuja. Since the transition of Dr. Mailafia to eternal glory, religious, political, and community leaders, among others, have paid personal visits to the Abuja home of The Mailafia. 

“The committee wishes to thank all those who have visited and sent condolence messages to the family. We thank everyone for identifying with the bereaved family and look forward to the scheduled funeral activities in bidding farewell cum paying last respects to Obadiah Mailafia.”

Some gunmen who are suspected militants of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) on Wednesday engaged some Nigerian Army troops around the palace of Eze Aro in the Arochukwu Local Government Area of Abia State in a gun duel.

According to Daily Trust, five of the gunmen fell to the superior firepower of the military.

The IPOB militants reportedly stormed the community to enforce “sit-at-home” order declared by the group. 

It had previously asked residents of the state to always remain indoors anytime its leader, Nnamdi Kanu is being arraigned in the court.

Meanwhile, Kanu was arraigned on a seven-count charges at an Abuja court on Thursday where he pleaded not guilty.

A source said immediately residents of the area got news that the IPOB leader had been brought to court, they took to the streets in celebration. 

It was also gathered that some IPOB members, who were also in a jubilant mood that Kanu was alive, contrary to several reports doubting the safety of the separatist leader, marched on the streets.

The suspected IPOB members on their arrival at the First Bank axis of the town exchanged gunfire with the soldiers.

The security source further revealed that five members of the pro-Biafra group bowed to the superior firepower of the troops.

He said the gunshots caused pandemonium in Arochukwu, as residents scuttled into nearby bushes.
