An Abuja-based journalist, Mr. Tordue Salem, a reporter with Vanguard Newspaper has been declared missing.

 

The journalist who was last seen on Wednesday, October 13, 2021, could not be reached on his mobile phone.

Salem was the National Assembly (House of Representatives) correspondent for the newspaper.

 

His mysterious disappearance has caused fears and anxiety for his family and friends.

 

The Commissioner of Police for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Babaji Sunday, while reacting to the development said operatives of the Command were working round the clock find Tordue.

 

CP Babaji acknowledged that the matter was reported at the National Assembly Police Station and when he was briefed, he immediately ordered a radio alert to all police divisions and area commands to commence the search for the journalist.

 

“We are seriously on the matter. However, we have not received any information about any kidnap or demand for ransom.

 

“My men have not received any information about any corpse either on the road or abandoned corpse from the mortuary. But we are seriously searching,” he said.

 

The CP said he was further made to understand that the journalist left his car at the National Assembly Complex on the day he went missing, hence there is a possibility he may have gone out with some other persons.

 

He, however, assured that the police will do everything they can to find him. 

 

Also, a senior officer at the office of the Inspector General of Police, said efforts were being made to locate Tordue.

 

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, has called on security agencies to be decisive and unravel the mystery surrounding the whereabouts of the journalist.

 

A statement signed by Emmanuel Ogbeche and Ochiaka Ugwu, Chairman and Secretary, respectively read, "For all us as journalists in Abuja, we have been on edge these past few days over the mysterious disappearance of our colleague and friend, Mr. Tordue Salem.

 

"It is worrying that an adult will simply vanish into thin air without a trace. This is unacceptable and we urge the police and the Department of State Services (DSS) to rise up to the occasion and provide answers to this troubling situation,"

 

"The NUJ officials called fellow journalists to remain hopeful, prayerful and offer any leads that could prove useful in resolving the impasse."

The Governor of Kwara State, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has accused the Information and Culture Minister, Lai Mohammed of duping him of hundreds of millions of naira donated to him for his governorship campaign. 

 

AbdulRazaq accused Mohammed, a minister in the Muhammadu Buhari-led government of pocketing a huge amount of money donated to him (AbdulRazaq) by an undisclosed Igbo businessman towards his political campaign in 2019.

The governor said even though he and the minister are in the same political party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), the latter did not contribute to his emergence as a governor in their state - Kwara. 

 

AbdulRazaq disclosed this in a This Day interview on Sunday. 

 

“The Chief of Staff to the Kaduna State Governor called and said Lai gave us an account but it’s not going through, 'can you give us another account so we can send you the money?' But I was going to campaign so I said fine. 

 

“I came back two days later and remembered, and I said they should call him and give him an account number. When we called, he said Lai had sorted it out. That one and several. Until today, as we speak, he never told anybody that he collected money.

 

“There’s a businessman from the South-East. His banker came to me and said his Oga (boss) wants (sic) to speak with me. I spoke with him and he said he was sending money to me. I said, thank you very much. After the election, he called me to congratulate me. 

 

“When he saw I was just saying ‘thank you’, then he asked if Lai didn’t deliver the money, I asked him what money? He said N100 million," the governor said. 

 

The governor said Mohammed has failed to account for hundreds of millions of naira donated towards his campaign, which the minister allegedly pocketed. 

 

He complained that the information minister humiliated him and worked against his interest in the run-up to the exercise.

 

The minister has previously denied stealing campaign funds, saying instead that he used his own money to fund AbdulRazaq’s election.

 

AbdulRazaq’s allegations revealed the crisis in Kwara APC was far from over. The party has been in turmoil since its revalidation exercise in which Mohammed claimed malpractice by the governor’s camp.

 

The minister later issued a statement warning that the party's chapter in Kwara could collapse because AbdulRazaq’s actions. The governor, however, said the minister was only crying foul, adding that he has no political base in Kwara.

 

The two factions worked together in 2019 to defeat former Senate President Bukola Saraki and take over most of the state and federal elective positions in Kwara.

Embattled Yoruba secessionist leader, Sunday Adeyemo, aka Sunday Igboho has warned the general public to avoid falling victim to people soliciting funds to foot his medical bills. 

 

He said he never asked anyone for money.

Igboho, in a statement issued by his spokesperson, Olayomi Koiki asked those soliciting for financial assistance on his behalf for medical treatment to desist from doing so.

 

He emphasised that he did not ask anyone to raise funds for him from members of the public in order to fund his medical expenses. 

 

The development followed a report being circulated in social media that he is soliciting funds through voluntary donations from members of the public to help him get medical attention after being rushed to the hospital. 

 

Igboho had appealed to the government of Benin Republic to allow him to travel to Germany to seek proper medical attention.

 

The statement is titled, “Chief Sunday Adeyemo has not asked for money towards his medical treatment."

 

It reads: “To the General Public. I have just received a message from the lawyer of Chief Sunday Adeyemo aka Igboho, to advise and tell the general public that he has not asked anyone, any of his security men or groups of people to demand money towards his medical treatment in Benin Republic.

 

“Information says some individuals have been collecting money for chief's medical treatment bill.

 

“Yes, Chief Sunday Adeyemo is not feeling well like we have reported and we are still using this medium to ask the Government of Benin to please allow him to travel for proper medical treatment for his illness.

 

“If anyone is not sure of someone calling you for payment towards chief treatment please contact myself Olayomi Koiki, his spokesman on +447594050979.

 

“And we use this medium to tell those asking for payment for chief medical treatment to desist from doing so.”

 

Koiki had earlier said Igboho, who is being detained in the Benin Republic, needs urgent medical treatment. 

 

A statement by the Koiki titled 'On behalf of Chief Sunday Adeyemo, aka Igboho', called on the government of Benin Republic to grant Igboho permission to receive urgent medical attention. 

 

Igboho was arrested alongside his wife in Cotonou, Benin Republic by security operatives in the West African country on July 19, after fleeing Nigeria to evade arrest by Nigeria's secret police.

 

The Department of State Services (DSS) had declared Igboho wanted after its operatives carried out a bloody raid on his residence in the Soka area of Ibadan, Oyo State.

 

DSS Public Relations Officer, Peter Afunnaya, had advised Igboho to turn himself in.

 

“Those cheering and eulogising him may appeal to or advice him to do the needful,” Afunnaya had said. “He should surrender himself to the appropriate authorities. He or anyone can never be above the law."

 

However, Igboho's wife has since been released from police custody while Igboho remains in detention in the West African country.

Suspected armed bandits have attacked villagers in the Goronyo market, Goronyo Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

 

According to a report by NewsWire, the assailants attacked the market in large numbers on Sunday night, shooting sporadically and killing several persons.

Meanwhile, the number of casualties could not be ascertained at the time of publishing this report. 

 

In the past two weeks, bandits have launched attacks on a village market in Sokoto.

 

Earlier this month, at least 19 traders were killed by bandits who raided a weekly market at Unguwan Lalle in the Sabon Birni Local Government Area of the state.

 

The attack also left several others injured, the majority of whom were taken to the General Hospital, Sabon Birni, for treatment. 

 

Unguwan Lalle, a community located along Goronyo-Sabon Birni Road, has suffered a series of bandit attacks in recent months.

 

Five soldiers who were on a rescue mission in the area were ambushed and killed by bandits a few months ago. A resident had said the attack happened during market hours.

 

For several weeks, troops have been conducting air and ground operations on bandit camps in neighbouring Zamfara State where authorities have shut down telecoms services to disrupt communication between the gangs.

 

Bandits fleeing the military operation in Zamfara have set up camps in the Sabon Birni district from where they raid villages.

 

The influx of bandits from neighbouring Zamfara State prompted authorities in Sokoto to suspend weekly markets and shut down mobile phone services in border areas, including Sabon Birni.

 

Last week, some youths of Goronyo town in the Goronyo Local Government Area of Sokoto State flooded the streets to protest against the abysmal level of insecurity in the area. 

 

A source said the youths were demonstrating against the insecurity in the area, which had forced many residents to flee the town. 

 

 

He said, “Protest is going on at Goronyo town in Sokoto state. The youths took to the streets protesting rampant insecurity that is forcing people to flee the town. The protest is currently ongoing.”

 

 

Photos obtained by SaharaReporters show roadblocks and burning tyres as the youths expressed their displeasure with killings and kidnappings going on unchecked in their area. 

 

 

Sokoto is one of the states ravaged by insecurity in the North, a situation that has worsened under President Muhammadu Buhari-led government. Just recently, the state government ordered the shutdown of telecommunications services in some parts of the state to curb the prevailing banditry in the state. 

 

 

The ban on mobile phone services is effective in Dange Shuni, Tambuwal, Sabon Birni, Raba, Tureta, Goronyo, Tangaza and Isa local government areas amongst others.

 

 

Meanwhile, some bandits operating in the Eastern Senatorial District of the state recently resorted to writing letters to reach out to families of their victims to demand ransoms. 

 

 

A source, who was privy to the bandits’ new antics in Sokoto, said a letter was written to a traditional ruler in Burkusuma, demanding a ransom to secure the release of 20 persons kidnapped from two communities in the Sabon Birni Local Government Area.

Various contestants endorsed by Nigeria's First Lady, Aisha Buhari have all won in the just concluded state congress of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Adamawa.

 

A unity list said to have been endorsed by Aisha Buhari saw all the names listed, winning various State Working Committee (SWC) offices contested.

Others said to have also endorsed the list are former Governor Murtala Nyako, former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Nuhu Ribadu and Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) Boss Mustapha.

 

By the end of the congress, which took over 30 hours, all loyalists of the First Lady had won the offices they contested for.

 

However, the outcome has been fiercely rejected by a group backed by former SGF, Babachir Lawal and sex toy-loving senator, Elisha Abbo.

 

Spokesperson for the group, Barr. Shagna Pwamaddi, told journalists that "the purported state congress was a sham".

 

"The exercise was marred by irregularities, including over-voting.

 

"We would not hesitate to explore the internal mechanism for resolving disputes, failure of which we'll challenge the outcome in a law Court," he said.
