Gunmen who abducted three pastors on their way to a crusade in Kogi State have demanded a ransom of N80 million for their release.

 

The clerics were reportedly kidnapped on Friday along the Ochadamu-Okele-Ejule Road in the Ofu Local Government Area of the state while going to minister at a three-day crusade.

One of the kidnapped clerics has been identified as Pastor Sunday Emmanuel Abbah from Olamaboro Local Government Area of the state but he resides Lokoja, the state capital.

A family source of one of the abducted clerics confirmed to The PUNCH that the kidnappers had demanded a ransom of N80 million.

 

Meanwhile, the Kogi State Police Public Relations Officer, William Aya, who has previously confirmed the abduction of the clerics, said that the state police command had deployed officers to rescue the victims unhurt.

 

“The command is aware and efforts are on to effect their release,” Aya said.

Governors in South-West Nigeria, under the South-West Governors Forum, have tasked security agencies to probe the activities of undocumented migrants in the region.

 

This comes a week after the deadly terrorist attack on St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Owo, Ondo State.

The forum, comprising Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State, Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti, Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos, Gboyega Oyetola of Osun State and Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, at a virtual meeting on Sunday, reviewed reports from various states on the factors militating against peace and security in the region.

 

They expressed concern over agitations from people over spaces occupied by ‘undocumented settlers’.

 

Meanwhile, the governors who spoke on the influx of commercial motorcyclists, popularly called Okada riders, into all parts of the South-West, especially the state capitals resolved to put ‘stringent regulation in place for their operation'.

 

The forum also declared a 3-day mourning period in memory of victims of the terror attack and directed the flying of flags at half-mast in all public buildings, facilities and official residences across all the states in the South-West.

 

The communiqué read: “The recent attack on St Francis Catholic Church, Owaluwa Street, Owo, compels immediate intervention in the whole of the South West to nip the insidious phenomenon of insurgency in the bud.

 

“The meeting, consequently, took decisions, some of which are expected to have far-reaching implications in the quest to protect lives and property in the region.

 

“The governors condemn, in very strong terms, the horrendous crime perpetrated by terrorists against the people and residents of Owo, Ondo State, and, by extension, the peace-loving people of the South West. The governors sympathise with the victims of the mindless attack in Owo.

 

“The governors agreed to declare a 3-day mourning period in memory of the victims of the 5th June, 2022 terror attack on St Francis Catholic, Owaluwa Street, Owo, Ondo State, starting from Monday, 13th June, to Wednesday, 15th June, 2022 to symbolise our collective loss across all South Western States in Nigeria.

 

“The meeting agreed that all the governors should direct the flying of flags at half-mast in all public buildings, facilities and official residences across all the states in the South West in honour of the victims of the Owo terror attack.

 

“The governors noted, with great discomfiture, the increasing agitations about spaces taken over by unidentified and unknown migrants in all South-West states.

 

“The meeting, therefore, recommends an increase in the scope of surveillance of the activities of these undocumented settlers by relevant security agencies in all the states.

 

“The governors, as chief security officers, resolved to continue to assist the security agencies in the areas of crisis management and intelligence gathering at all times.

 

“The governors reviewed reports from various states on the factors militating against peace and security in the region. They expressed grave concern about the influx of Okada riders into all parts of the South-West, especially the state capitals.

 

“The meeting further resolved that efforts be geared toward identity management of Okada riders and stringent regulation put in place for their operation.

 

“Consequently, the forum decided it was time to reconvene the South-West Security Committee to look critically into this creeping menace before it blossoms into another intractable social problem.

 

“The committee will be expected to submit its findings on the desirability of Okada operations in the region. It is also expected to submit a multi-level template to combat the threat of insurgency and terrorism in the region.

 

“The forum agreed to convene forthwith a physical meeting of the South West Governors to deliberate on the security challenges confronting the region.”

Osun State Security Network Agency, popularly known as Amotekun Corps has deployed its operatives to several churches and mosques to ensure adequate security for Christian and Muslim faithful in their places of worship.

This was disclosed on Sunday in a statement released by Yusuf Idowu, the spokesperson for Amotekun in Osun.

Last Sunday, some terrorists stormed St Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Owo, Ondo State, killing at least 40 congregants and injuring several others.

The attack has continued to generate reactions locally and internationally, and the move by Osun Amotekun is aimed at preventing such from happening in the state and protecting residents, Yusuf said.

“The corps would continue to adopt proactive security strategies against any form of security threat in the state.

“Sufficient personnel had been assigned to provide security for the churches and mosques in the state. We are also patrolling the entire state against any form of security threats.

“We will continue to map out comprehensive security measures that will enable us to apprehend all kinds of criminals in the state.

“We have deployed corps to all the churches and mosques in all the nooks and crannies of the state to secure our people from any form of attack by the criminals,” Yusuf said.

He also encouraged the volunteer of information by the public to support the security outfit to carry out its responsibility to the people.

 

The Nigerian government has identified the Islamic State’s West Africa Province (ISWAP) as the group behind the Owo church massacre.

But the Ondo State governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, has described the statement as too hasty, saying ISWAP is known for claiming credit for its atrocities.

“The statement is too hasty. I take their conclusion with a pinch of salt. ISWAP don’t hide their attacks. If they have done it, they would have owned up. We are yet to know their identity and our security people are still on their trail,” the governor had said.

With each election circle, Nigeria writes its own heart-wrenching elegy by electing candidates in their sunset years of life. APC presidential candidate Alhaji Bola Tinubu is 70 (?) years old, and PDP’s Abubakar Atiku flag bearer is 75 (?) years old.

 

On April 26, 2018, Rwanda’s head of state Paul Kagame hosted Mo Ibrahim and his Mo Ibrahim’s Foundation. The election of the APC and PDP octogenarians as presidential candidates in the 2023 election, brings into sharper focus what Mo Ibrahim said about Africans electing old, frail presidents.

 

Mohammed Ibrahim, founder and chairman of Mo Ibrahim Foundation, member of Global Board of Advisers, Council on Foreign Relations, expressed the views of rational thinking Africans when he jokingly but bluntly chastised methuselah African Presidents who cling to power at all costs. His rebuke of aging African Presidents is an indictment of Nigerians, especially the youths who keep on electing the Buharis, Tinubus, and Atikus of the world. Here’s Mo Ibrahim:

“This continent (Africa) is a continent of young people. Half of the people here are below 20 years old. Look at the average age of our presidents. It is about 63, 64 years old. We are the only continent in the world where we have presidents at 90 years old, starting new terms. I mean, are you guys crazy or what?

 

“We see people in wheelchairs, unable to raise their hands standing for elections. This is a joke. Yes, you are right to laugh, because the whole world is laughing at us. Look around you. Look at the United States. An economy of 15, 16 trillion dollars. We, all of Africa are less than 1 trillion dollars. This (US) is a 15, 16 trillion-dollar economy right? The most important country in the world, like it or not.

 

“(Barack) Obama, who happens to be half African anyway became President when he was 42 years old. If Obama was in Kenya, what will he be doing now? He will be driving a bus maybe. (Bill) Clinton became President at 46 years old. J.F. Kennedy was 43 years old when he became President. Why do these big countries, much bigger than us, entrust their economies, their nuclear weapons and all resources to people who are in their 40s? And we (Africans) only pick people at 90 years old to lead us. Lead us to where? To the grave?”

 

Nigeria, a sick country with 200 million sick people, will continue to elect the sickest of the sick as president to run the affairs of a dying country. This is a sad reality. There’s no hope in the foreseeable future that Nigerians will stop electing presidents that will lead them to no other place than the grave!

Some Catholic priests in Nigeria have enforced a policy of ‘No Permanent Voter Card (PVC), No Sunday Mass’.

 

In videos seen by SaharaReporters on Sunday, some church members were denied entry into Sunday masses over their inability to display their permanent voter cards issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

 

At St. Matthew's Catholic Church in Utugwang, Obudu Local Government Area of Cross River State, the assistant parish head was heard instructing those with their PVCs to come into the church and those without to go back home.

 

In another Catholic parish reportedly to be in one of the states in the North Central, the Reverend Father was heard saying, “From today if you are coming for mass, carry your PVC. If you don’t have your PVC, don’t bother coming.

 

“Because there is no way you have Christians filling up the church but only a handful of them go to vote during elections.

 

“So, it means ­our population and numbers mean nothing. So, we want Christians to take their responsibilities and roles seriously.

 

“So, today, I am serious about it. As I’m standing here, if you have your PVC— begin to come in. But if you don’t have your PVC, find your way back home. You won’t attend mass here.”

 

As political processes preceding the 2023 general elections continue to heighten, private, public and religious organisations have intensified campaigns for their staff and members respectively to get their PVCs to enable them to exercise their civic responsibility.

 

Last Thursday, the Alaba International Market in Lagos was shut down for traders to obtain their PVCs ahead of the 2023 general elections.

 

A law firm, Antonio Lex Firma, has also threatened to withhold the salaries of its staff members if they do not have voter cards as part of their civic duty ahead of the 2023 elections.

The family of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, have accused the UK Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, Liz Truss of ignoring evidence that the IPOB leader was taken to Nigeria from Kenya in an act of extraordinary rendition.

They also accused Truss of failing to end Kanu’s “unlawful” detention in Nigeria.

Kanu, the leader of the proscribed separatist group, has been detained since his rendition to Nigeria in June 2021. The IPOB leader is a British citizen and his supporters and family have been disappointed that the UK does not appear to be working to get him freed.

The Nigerian government has previously claimed Kanu was extradited to Abuja, Nigeria’s capital with assistance from Interpol but his family say the IPOB leader was seized and tortured in Kenya before being flown to Nigeria.

The Guardian UK reports that in a pre-action legal letter to the foreign secretary, Liz Truss, the family’s lawyers, Bindmans LLP, say there is “overwhelming evidence” that he was subjected to extraordinary rendition.

The letter cites testimony Kanu has given to his lawyers and brother, an expert report, which has identified the flight they believe he was unlawfully transported on, and the Nigerian government’s failure to provide details as to how Kanu – who did not have his British passport with him – came to be there.

 

Bindmans, which has previously threatened legal action over lack of consular assistance for Kanu, says Truss must take a view on whether there has been a breach of international law or face a court challenge.

 

“If Mr Kanu has been subject to extraordinary rendition, this is a grave breach of international law which has a significant impact on the discretion which the secretary of state exercises in respect of the steps she should take to assist Mr Kanu under international and domestic law,” wrote Bindmans solicitor Shirin Marker.

 

“Forming a view as to whether a breach of international law has occurred, and if so the gravity of the breach, is therefore an essential prerequisite to the exercise of discretion on taking further steps at international and domestic law.”

 

According to the letter, Kanu was tortured and subjected to inhuman treatment in Kenya last year. He was allegedly detained by security agents in Kenya, who took him to a house where he was chained to the floor and beaten for approximately eight days. He was subsequently put on a private jet on June 27 and flown to Abuja, the letter also says.

Kanu’s brother, Kingsley, said: “With every day that passes, I am increasingly concerned for my brother’s welfare in detention and increasingly frustrated by the UK government’s ineffectiveness in assisting him. I hope the court will rule the foreign secretary must recognise the seriousness of my brother’s situation and properly consider what other steps she can take to assist him in light of his extraordinary rendition.”

 

Kanu was arrested in Nigeria in 2015 and charged with terrorism-related offences. But in 2017 after securing bail, the military invaded his home in Abia State, allegedly killing many IPOB members. Kanu subsequently fled Nigeria.

However, his case has since resumed at a Federal High Court in Abuja following his rendition and detention by Nigeria’s secret police, the Department of State Services (DSS).

Guerrilla warfare is a form of irregular warfare in which small groups of combatants, such as paramilitary personnel, armed civilians, or irregulars, use military tactics including ambushes, sabotage, raids, petty warfare, hit-and-run tactics, and mobility, to fight a larger and less-mobile traditional military.
Furthermore, Guerrilla tactics focus on avoiding head-on confrontations with enemy armies, instead engaging in limited skirmishes with the goal of exhausting adversaries and forcing them to withdraw. Guerrilla groups often depend on the logistical and political support of either the local population or foreign backers who sympathize with the guerrilla group's efforts.
Regardless of terminology, the importance of guerrilla warfare has varied considerably throughout history. Traditionally, it has been a weapon of protest employed to rectify real or imagined wrongs levied on a people either by a ruling government or by a foreign invader. As such, it has scored remarkable successes and has suffered disastrous defeats.

Specifically, the Owo massacre - the barbaric incident has no justification whatsoever; this is a time for sober reflection; a time for solemnity; a time for the electorates and delegates to do a honest appraisal, embark on soul searching and reexamine their conscience and act patriotically - identify and elect competent persons with strength of character and capacity to deal holistically, decisively and deliver on mandate. We sure need decent persons who are mentally alert and capable to earn our trust as a distressed nation.
Sadly, the alarming aspect is the security architecture which has broken down irrevocably - imagine the bomb blast and shooting at Catholic Church in Owo on Sunday with numbers of souls gruesomely murdered - this is nothing but a legacy of Terror, Sorrow, Tears and Blood. The unprovoked attacks and killing of several innocent worshippers at the St Francis Catholic Church, Owa-luwa Street, Owo, is a sad reminder of the dark days of terrorism and sad reality of our beloved country Nigeria.
Unfortunately, the country is equally beset by security and political challenges. Boko Haram insurgents still operate in the North-East. In the North-West, bandits are overwhelming the security forces. In North-Central Nigeria, deadly clashes between farmers and herders continue. And separatist and irredentist agitations resonate in the South-East and the South-West of the country. I daresay, that our beloved country Nigeria is under siege, it can only be an act of terrorism - given the same pattern of the last ten to twelve years. It is purely inspired by guerilla warfare
Our beloved country Nigeria seems to be in a state of emergency (warfare), we're going through very difficult situations - issues of terrorism, banditry kidnappings insurgency killings among others are not abating - the Owo massacre happen to be a very clear example of the state of hopelessness and despair. It was a black Sunday, when worshippers at the St Francis Catholic Church were cut in the crossfire. 
Please, permit me to conclude by identifying with our brothers and sisters the good people of Owo-kingdom, kabiyesi Olowo, oba Ajibade Gbadegesin Ogunoye, the Asiwaju of Owo-kingdom, my father, Otunba Oyewole Fashawe, and the government of Ondo State under the leadership of His Excellency Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu SAN. I therefore, join millions of our compatriots home and abroad to condemn the sacrilegious, gruesome and dastardly acts of the terrorists.
Finally, in the words of Howard Zinn, an American historian, playwright, philosopher, socialist thinker and World War II veteran: "To be hopeful in bad times is not just foolishly romantic. It is based on fact that human history is a history not only of cruelty but also of compassion, sacrifice, courage and kindness. ~ What we choose to emphasize in this history will determine our lives. If we see only the worst, it destroys our capacity to do something." In summary; God's best soldiers are trained in the school of adversity

Islamic organisation, the Muslim Rights Concern, has congratulated human rights activist and Amnesty International designated Prisoner of Conscience, Omoyele Sowore, for winning the presidential ticket of the African Action Congress (AAC).
This was disclosed in a statement circulated to the media by the director of MURIC, Professor Ishaq Akintola on Saturday.

Akintola also hailed the activist on his victory in the court case over intra-party squabbles.
Last week, the Court of Appeal in Abuja affirmed Sowore as the substantive chairman of the AAC.
On Thursday, the human rights activist won the presidential ticket of the AAC.
Sowore was declared the winner unopposed at the party’s national convention held at Work and Connect Event Center in Abuja, which was monitored by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and attended by members of the party across the country.
The activist will be up against Bola Tinubu, APC standard-bearer, Atiku Abubakar, PDP presidential candidate; Peter Obi, Labour Party presidential candidate, and others in the 2023 elections.
Reacting, MURIC said, “At this juncture, permit us, once again, to felicitate with the new flag bearers of other political parties who emerged winners in the last two or three days, particularly the indefatigable young activist, Omoyele Sowore, a good friend of MURIC.
“We also congratulate him on his victory in the court case over intra-party squabbles. Sowore is a frontline activist. He is consistent.
“We have great hope in him leading this country whenever the opportunity arises.”

Gunmen have reportedly killed Mr Emeka Alaehobi, the youths leader of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in Anambra State, after his abduction.
SaharaReporters gathered that Alaehobi was first kidnapped from his home in Ukpor, Nnewi South Local Government Area of the state on Wednesday by the assailants.

His family was waiting to receive call from his abductors to negotiate for ransom but never heard from the kidnappers until his remains were found on Saturday morning in a neighbouring town, Utuh.
A reliable source from his community, told SaharaReporters that his assailants might be the same group that have been terrorizing the state.
According to the source, “He is Hon Emeka Alaehobi, Nnewi South APGA local government youth leader. He was kidnapped two days ago by unknown gunmen.
“This morning his remains were found dumped at Utuh Junction.”
The Anambra State Police command spokesperson, DSP Toochukwu Ikenga confirmed that a corpse was discovered in the area on Saturday, but he said he was unable to ascertain the identity of the corpse.
He said, “When our operatives got to the scene, the corpse had been removed by some persons, we are yet to identify, and we have also ascertained that the corpse is that of the youths leader.”

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, Prince Casmir I. Ajulu, has called on Senator Stella Oduah to withdraw from the 2023 senatorial race following the certificate forgery allegation against her.
Ajulu, who is a founding member and convener of PDP in Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State asked Oduah to emulate former Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun.

Adeosun resigned in 2018 after the allegation that she tendered a forged National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) exemption certificate as part of her credentials.
SaharaReporters had reported that the lawmaker representing Anambra North Senatorial zone did not complete her National Youth Service.
The Director-General of the NYSC had said though Oduah was mobilised for the national service in 1982/83 and deployed to Lagos State, she absconded after the orientation and never completed the service.
In a statement obtained by SaharaReporters, Ajulu said all relevant documents of the Senator would be forwarded to the National Working Committee of the PDP together with an affidavit verifying the facts contained therein for necessary action.
He said, “By a letter dated 25th May 2022, the Concerned Anambra North PDP Stakeholders wrote my office and brought to my attention, a letter from the Director General, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) referenced - NYSC/DHQ/PPRU/783/VOL.III of 24th May 2022 whereby the Director General affirmed in paragraph 4(i) that “Stella Adaeze Oduah was mobilized for National Service in 1982/83 Service Year and deployed to Lagos State. After the Orientation Course, she absconded and never completed the National Service. The consequence of this is that she is not qualified for the issuance of the Certificate of National Service”.
“In order to ascertain the veracity of the said letter from the NYSC, I brought an official application to the Director General NYSC, pursuant to Section 2 of the Freedom of Information Act 2011 of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for a Certified True Copy (CTC) of the letter issued to the Concerned Anambra North PDP Stakeholders.
“On payment of necessary fees, the Director General NYSC issued my office the CTC of the letter for official and record purposes.
“The Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA) had by a letter referenced - NECA/SELA/H4 of 11th January 2017 addressed to Senator Princess Stella A. Oduah claimed that she carried out her NYSC primary assignment with NECA in 1982 contrary to the position of the Director General NYSC that Stella Adaeze Oduah was mobilised for National Service in 1982/83 Service Year and deployed to Lagos State and after the Orientation Course, she absconded and never completed the National Service.
“Sen. Princess Stella Adaeze Oduah had in her affidavit of fact sworn to at the High Court Registry Onitsha on 23rd day of October 2014 averred that sometime in 2010 while in transit from Akili Ozizor in Ogbaru Local Government Area to Abuja, discovered that some of her personal belongings were missing including her original National Youth Service Corps Certificate issued in 1983. The facts deposed are contrary to the position of the Director General of the NYSC.
“Sen. Princess Stella A. Oduah went further to obtain a Police Extract on 27th October 2014 from the office of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), the Nigeria Police Ogbaru Division Atani, Anambra State, to the effect that she lost her documents including her original National Youth Service Corps Certificate issued in 1983. The facts deposed are contrary to the position of the Director General of the NYSC.
“From the afore-stated facts, it is not in doubt that Senator Stella Adaeze Oduah committed fraud by claiming that she completed her service year and was issued with NYSC discharge Certificate. She also committed perjury by deposing affidavit to the effect that she lost her original NYSC discharge Certificate.
“By the extant provision of the law, she is estopped from occupying any public office having not participated or obtained exemption letter from the NYSC and having deposed affidavit to the effect that she graduated from a foreign higher Institution with B.Sc. (Business Administration).
“In the circumstance, it is most honourable for Sen. Princess Stella Adaeze Oduah to emulate the former Minister of Finance, Adeosun and bow out of the 2023 Senatorial race on account of the Certified True Copy of the letter emanating from the Director General, NYSC to the effect that she was mobilised for National Service in 1982/83 Service Year, deployed to Lagos State and after the orientation course, she absconded and never completed the National Service and was not issued Certificate of National Service; and also on account of fraud and perjury.
“For the avoidance of doubt, all relevant documents will be forwarded to the National Working Committee together with an affidavit verifying the facts contained therein for necessary action. I will be compelled to take further necessary action known to law if need be. Finally, I most respectfully urge Anambra State PDP Stakeholders to remain united in the face of the challenges. I will remain resolute in the fight against corruption, injustice and nepotism. We must call a Spade a Spade.”
